The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Patterson has closed the distance and engaged Strickland in a clinch.

Patterson pulls guard effortlessly.
Strickland throws a strike but Patterson rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.

Patterson really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Strickland. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Patterson seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Strickland does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.

Patterson fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Strickland sprawls well initially but Patterson persists and gets the takedown into half guard.

The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.

Strickland gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.
Strickland is trying to control the position but Patterson postures up.

Patterson closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Strickland to the mat! Strickland manages to get full guard.

Strickland manages to escape and get back to his feet.

Patterson gets double underhooks and manages to take the fight to the ground.

Patterson gets to his feet. Strickland looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son!
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Patterson is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Strickland is just riding it out for now. Patterson eventually gives up the hold.
Patterson seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.

Patterson has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Strickland can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Patterson creates some space and throws a big elbow, but Strickland sees it coming and moves his head just enough to avoid the strike.

Patterson has hold of one of Strickland's legs. Strickland is fighting the takedown attempt but Patterson gets the trip and lands the takedown into guard.
Strickland wants to hit a switch here but Patterson passes into full mount! Oh no, disaster for Strickland there!
Patterson misses with a series of strikes from mount. He'll no doubt be working on his ground and pound when he gets back to the gym.
