PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Monroe Tanner (ranked 24758 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jon Jones (ranked 6549 p4p, 0 weight class). Fingers crossed for an exciting fight - I'm sure both fighters are looking for a nice under the table bonus!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Monroe Tanner!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Jon Jones!
The judges for this bout are Alan Glass, George Francis and Chris Downing.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Tanner closes the distance and clinches.
Jones goes for a takedown attempt but Tanner pushes him away and we're back to fighting at a distance.

Jones forces Tanner back against the cage and clinches.
Jones lands a nice elbow.


It looks like Monroe Tanner has been cut.
Tanner could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.

Jones manages to break the clinch.

Jones throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Tanner was covering up waiting for the punch and Jones finishes the takedown easily into guard.
Jones keeps in close for a moment and lands a decent shot to the side of Tanner's head.

Jones gets to his feet - Tanner follows without any prompting.

Jones clinches up against the cage.

Tanner jumps guard.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Jones wants to control from the top but Tanner keeps moving.
Jones looking to pass the guard.
Jones is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.
Tanner wants to sweep but no luck.

Tanner throwing his legs up looking for a triangle.
Tanner throws a couple of weedy looking strikes off his back.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Jones scoring with some ground and pound.
Tanner keeping moving, preventing Jones from controlling successfully.
Jones trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
Jones stays in close to Tanner's body and controls the position.
We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.
Jones trying to control but Tanner is working from the bottom.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.

Jones gets a takedown into half guard.
Tanner is trying to escape back to his feet but Jones uses the scramble to pass into side control.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Tanner tries to bench press Jones off him but Jones keeps the position.
Jones laying and praying for a moment but Tanner takes advantage and regains half guard.
Jones is figuring out what he wants to do next.

Jones works his foot free and advances to mount.
Jones controlling from the full mount.
Tanner swinging wildly from the bottom but he's not landing.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Jones tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Jon Jones dominated that round.
The cut man is working on Monroe Tanner's cut.
Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin!



Jones shoots in for a takedown and gets it.
The step up in weight doesn't seem to be a problem for Jones. He's performing admirably here against the bigger man.
Jones wants to control but Tanner is keeping him busy.
Jones wants to stand up but Tanner has a hold of him and won't allow it.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Jones not doing much here.
Jones seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Tanner does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
Jones has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

Jones has managed to clinch.

Jones breaks the clinch.
Jones tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Tanner swivels and escapes.
Tanner lands with a head kick! That's gotta hurt.
Tanner leaves Jones with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Jones is breathing heavily.

Nice takedown defense from Jones. No joy for Tanner on that attempt.

Jones clinches up against the cage.
Tanner fails to pull guard.
Jones is clearly stalling here... Pick up the pace son.

Tanner decides to pull guard.
Jones looking to sit in guard and control but Tanner gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Jones looking to sweep using the butterfly guard but Tanner puts pay to that idea as he passes nicely into half guard.

Jones tries to regain full guard. Instead though, Tanner has advanced to mount. Uh oh.
Tanner trying to control but Jones is having none of it.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Jones can do anything to dispel that myth.
Jones wants to hold on but Tanner pushes him away.
Jones is looking to get to half guard.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Jones wants to hold on but Tanner pushes him away.
Jones might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Tanner haven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.
Tanner looking to finish Jones with some ground and pound. This is bad for Jones!
Jones wants to control but Tanner is having none of it.
Tanner pausing momentarily but resumes with a couple of decent strikes that do a bit of damage.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Jones is trying to escape the mount.
Monroe Tanner overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Tanner lands an elbow that was bordering on illegal but the referee lets it go with a warning.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Monroe Tanner dominated that second round.
The cut man is working on Monroe Tanner's cut.
That's time! Tanner's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. This is the final round!


Tanner shoots in looking for a takedown. Jones tries to sprawl out of it but Tanner keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Jones manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Tanner shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.

Jones scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice.

Jones decides to stand up, so the ref orders Tanner to his feet.
Jones fails with a takedown attempt from distance.

Jones shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in side control! That's better than Jones was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!

Tanner throws Jones to one side and escapes!
Monroe Tanner is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Jones takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Tanner takes a hook to the side of the head. I wonder if that's got his ears ringing.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Tanner has a takedown stuffed.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Monroe Tanner. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Jones darts in and clinches Tanner up against the cage.
Tanner taking a breather.
Jones tries for a takedown. No joy.
Tanner is trying to work out of this bad position, with his back against the cage.
Tanner is trying to push Jones away but Jones has him pressed against the cage, so he's going nowhere.
Jones has Tanner pressed up against the cage and is working for takedown. Tanner manages to improve position though and keeps the fight standing.
Tanner has had enough of the clinch and is looking to separate.

Tanner successfully pulls guard.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Jones trying to control but Tanner is working from the bottom.
Jones controls the pace of the fight for a moment.
Tanner lands a beautiful sweep and he's now moved into his opponent's guard.

Jones wants to stand and escape but Tanner is having none of it.

Jones is looking for a triangle here but Tanner uses the submission attempt to pass into side control.

Tanner scores with a couple of short elbows.
Jones is looking to get back to his feet here but Tanner is keeping cool and he's managed to take Jones's back.
Jones looks to control his opponent's hands but he's not mananging it at the moment.
What can Jones do to escape this position? He's going to have to figure it out pretty quick if he wants to stay in the fight!

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Tanner scores with some strikes to the side of the head there. Good, points scoring shots.
Tanner avoiding Jones 's attempts to control his hands.
Jones tries to escape the position.
Tanner lands with a big left hand that may well have hurt his opponent. Can Jones hold on?!
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Tanner is hanging on to Jones's back as he tries to escape.

And that's the end of the fight!
Monroe Tanner showed his dominance in that final round.
I think Tanner has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
