The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Lester walks into a stiff left hand from De Souza. Lester misses with a wild body shot. Lester closes the distance but De Souza moves to the side and De Souza counters with a single leg into guard. Lester didn't expect that. De Souza trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet. De Souza wants to control from the top but Lester keeps moving. De Souza looking to sit in guard and control but Lester gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top. Lester trying to control the position from guard on top but De Souza is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
That's one minute gone in the round. Lester seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up. De Souza working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Lester doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Lester manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem. My spies in Holding Cell inform me that Lester has been getting involved in the gym's BJJ sparring sessions. Let's see whether that pays dividends! De Souza escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Lester gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance. Lester must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
That's two minutes gone in the round. The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action. De Souza working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Lester doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Lester manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem. Lester really doesn't want to stay on the ground with De Souza. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out. De Souza has managed to work for a loose triangle. I think Lester should be able to defend this one pretty easily though. Oh, De Souza has tightened it up now! Lester should have reacted faster there - he's in big trouble and yes, he's tapped out! This one is all over!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:44 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Triangle). Rogerio De Souza!
