Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the super heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
0 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Brendon Rios! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Hanayama Kaoru! The judges for this bout are Shigeki Fujiwara, Hirohito Nitta and Kenichi Hosakawa.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Rios shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Kaoru as he avoids it easily. Kaoru looks really tired already! That doesn't bode well for a good, competitive fight! Rios gets caught flat footed, as Kaoru shoots in with a quick takedown into guard. Kaoru must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu. Rios has his foot on Kaoru's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Kaoru works his way back into a safe position though. Rios might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground. Kaoru is looking to stand up but Rios won't let him. Rios trying to control the position.
In the pre-fight buildup videos we saw Kaoru working his ground and pound in the gym. He isn't landing a great percentage of his ground strikes so far though. Rios could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely. Rios has his hands on Kaoru's head, controlling the position. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. There's a bit of a scramble here and now Rios is on top in guard.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Kaoru controls Rios momentarily but Rios frees himself.
That's one minute gone in the round. Rios throwing strikes from guard but Kaoru blocks nicely. Kaoru is trying to keep Rios in close.
Rios drops back looking for a leg! Kaoru is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Kaoru manages to kick Rios off! Rios jumps back into Kaoru's guard. Kaoru trying to keep a closed guard but Rios is proving a slippery customer.
That's two minutes gone in the round. The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena. Rios drops back looking for a leg! Kaoru is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Kaoru manages to kick Rios off! Rios jumps back into Kaoru's guard. Kaoru looking for submissions from the bottom but instead Rios passes into half guard.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Kaoru can do anything to dispel that myth. Rios is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there. Rios thows a huge punch but Kaoru dodges it nicely.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Kaoru is defending against the submission attempts here by Rios.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
That's four minutes gone in the round. A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd. Rios clinches up against the cage. Rios pulls Kaoru into guard.
Rios has Kaoru pulled in close to control his posture. Rios has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent. Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out! This is a sustained period of stalling by Rios. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Brendon Rios dominated that round. The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!
Rios takes the fight into the clinch. Rios blocks a knee to the body. He'll have a nicely bruised forearm in the morning. Rios tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Kaoru smiles and moves away.
Rios circles away from the clinch attempt.
Rios is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Kaoru can do to turn this around? We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Rios blocks the body kick.
Rios feinted with a counter takedown. Kaoru looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into side control! Oh, that's bad for Rios! Kaoru is breathing heavily. Rios regains half guard.
That's one minute gone in the round. Rios is controlling Kaoru's trapped leg to prevent Kaoru from advancing to side control. Rios manages to get to full guard.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Rios is on top in guard.
Rios is sitting in guard, working some ground and pound. Rios is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there. Rios lands a couple of digs.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Rios thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Kaoru utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound. Kaoru is pulling down on Rios's head to control his posture. Rios in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time. Rios with a nice head shot there. Rios is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.

Kaoru looked like he wanted to counter with a punch but didn't throw it. Rios drives through with a takedown into Kaoru's guard. Let's see what he can do from the top position.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Kaoru keeping moving, preventing Rios from controlling successfully. Rios with a couple of shots to the head there. Not particularly brutal. Kaoru trying to control the position.

Brendon Rios dominated that second round. The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. This is the final round!
Rios shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Kaoru is trying to defend but Rios finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further. Kaoru is trying to escape back to his feet but Rios uses the scramble to pass into side control.

He has the arm isolated but Kaoru is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now. Rios tries for a kimura but Kaoru is defending well. Kaoru wants to control but Rios postures up.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless. Rios has worked his way into a potential kimura here. Kaoru is trying to get out of the position but his squirming has just got him deeper into trouble. Rios yanks on the arm and Kaoru is forced to tap due to a very painful looking submission! Nice work by Rios.
