Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
31 - 13 - 2, fighting out of New York, Eric Staal! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
20 - 15 - 3, fighting out of Las Vegas, Bill Newton! The judges for this bout are Frank Antenori, Don Winkell and Jack Bonds.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Newton thuds his right hand into Staal's forehead from close range. That could be painful for both fighters. Staal darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard. Staal working over Newton with some ground and pound. Newton looks like he wants out of this position, which is understandable. Staal not doing much here.
Staal is keen to just control but Newton is a slippery customer. Newton is looking to improve his position.

Newton gets caught napping as Staal dives in and scores a takedown. Newton manages to retain guard. Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show! Staal with poor footwork there. He got himself in a bit of a tangle, enabling Newton to score with a decent uppercut. Newton checks a leg kick nicely. "You're gunna get knocked out" taunts Newton, as that shot connected.
Newton goes for a double leg but Staal avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Staal continues to drive forward. Newton throws a body shot but no joy. Newton takes a solid shot to the body. That one hurt him but he's trying not to show it. Staal's corner calls for a 1-2. Staal obliges with the 1 part as he scores the single shot and moves back out of range. Staal throws a sloppy head kick and Newton moves out of range easily. Staal tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Newton defends well and Staal ends up having to push Newton into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch. Staal throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.

This has been an exciting period of action! Newton throws an overhand right that lands on Staal's shoulder, as Staal tries to avoid the shot. Newton scores with a punch to the gut of his opponent. Newton throws a big shot that misses. Newton lands a straight punch to the body, keeping Staal at a distance.

And that's the end of the fight! That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Eric Staal. Well I reckon that's a shut out for Staal, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent.
