PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Edgar Hanson (ranked 7130 p4p, 0 weight class) and Pongsak Monkoltham (ranked 5978 p4p, 0 weight class). Monkoltham has a niggling injury. He would have liked to come in 100% fit but that's not always possible. Pongsak Monkoltham will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of New York, Pongsak Monkoltham!
The judges for this bout are Reed Andrews, David Schapiro and John Roberts.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Hanson fails miserably with a takedown attempt.
Monkoltham looks winded!

Hanson gets a takedown into half guard.
The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Hanson connects with a nice short shot to Monkoltham's temple.
Hanson is scoring with some nice ground and pound from the dominant position.
Hanson working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that.

Hanson seems to be working for a kimura but Monkoltham defends the submission attempt.

Hanson is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Hanson looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Monkoltham with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.

Hanson is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Monkoltham is just riding it out for now. Hanson eventually gives up the hold.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.

Monkoltham pushes Hanson away and creates a bit of space to escape. He's almost out here... but no, Hanson gets a good hold of his legs and remains firmly in side control.

Hanson is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Monkoltham is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.
Hanson knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Monkoltham on the ground.

Hanson is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Monkoltham can do to turn this around?

Monkoltham wants to push off and get back to the center of the mat but Hanson has him pressed against the cage.

Hanson pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Monkoltham misses the jab.
Hanson changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Monkoltham tries to avoid it but Hanson manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Monkoltham to the ground. Monkoltham escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.

and Hanson counters with a good, hard body kick but Monkoltham shrugs it off.

Monkoltham gets tackled into the cage by Hanson. Hanson maintains the clinch.
Monkoltham wants to break the clinch but can't.
Hanson unloads a knee to the mid-section.
Monkoltham takes an elbow to the temple.
Monkoltham takes a knee to the side of the body.

Monkoltham tries to break free but Hanson pushes him back against the cage.

Hanson has closed the distance and engaged Monkoltham in a clinch.
Monkoltham tries to circle away but Hanson has him pinned against the cage.
The fighters are pressed against the cage, as the pace of the fight slows.

Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Hanson is trying to trip Monkoltham. He has hold of a leg but Monkoltham is hopping around, keeping his balance for the moment. Hanson persists though and gets the takedown into guard.

Hanson decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Monkoltham, up you get!

Hanson breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Monkoltham fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
Hanson is looking to counter with a body kick.
Monkoltham looks to land a combination but Hanson avoids it well.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

Hanson drops down for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Monkoltham tries to circle away but Hanson has him pinned against the cage.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Edgar Hanson dominated that second round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. And we move into the final round!

Hanson has control of Monkoltham's right arm, working for a kimura. It's a bit of a token attempt though and Monkoltham regains control of the situation pretty easily.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Monkoltham really wants to buck Hanson off and get back to his feet.
Hanson scoring with some good ground and pound from mount here. Will he manage to finish Monkoltham?

Monkoltham tries to buck Hanson off so he can stand up but Hanson has got his back now - this could be big trouble! He's slapped on a rear naked choke that looks really tight! Monkoltham falls backwards, slamming Hanson to the mat but Hanson holds on tight! Monkoltham is forced to tap and this one is all over!
