PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Christopher Ray (ranked 5000 p4p, 0 weight class) and Billy Dee (ranked 7089 p4p, 0 weight class). Billy Dee told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Christopher Ray!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Billy Dee!
The judges for this bout are Cecil Peabody, George Francis and Tiny Johnson.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
A leg kick checked by Dee.
Dee stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Dee wants it to stay on the feet.
Ray looks to land a combination. Dee sees it coming but can only parry a couple of the shots.
Dee thows a body kick. Ray tries to catch it but that hurt him.

Dee clinches up with Ray and pushes him back against the cage.
Dee is trying to work for a single leg takedown but Ray pulls him back up using the underhooks.
An uppercut on the inside fails to land for Ray.
Ray lands with a short punch from the clinch.
Ray tries to pull guard but Dee holds him up against the cage and eventually Ray drops back down to his feet.
Ray jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Dee walks away with a smile on his face. Ray gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Christopher Ray. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Dee lands a high kick!

Ray drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.

Dee explodes and escapes back to his feet! Nice escape there!

That's one minute gone in the round.
Dee scores with a kick to the body.
Dee closes this distance looking for a takedown but Ray circles away.
Dee misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.

Ray closes the distance and gets a trip takedown into side control. Dee quickly recovers to half guard.
Dee is not content to let Ray control the position.

Ray is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.
Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Ray in particular looking to stall.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

Ray is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.
Ray slows the pace down in half guard.
If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

Dee closes the distance and clinches.

Dee jumps into guard, dragging Ray to the mat.
Ray pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Dee is keeping the position for now.
Ray is stalling in the full guard.

Dee is pulling down on Ray's head. It's preventing any offense from Ray, at least for the moment.
Ray showing good wrestling skills to control the position.
Dee really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Ray. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Dee tries to land a sweep but no joy.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Billy Dee will probably get the nod.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.


Dee misses with a double jab.
Dee shoots in and drives through. Ray sprawls well.

Ray drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.
Ray sitting in side control, looking to soften his opponent up with elbows and hammerfists but Dee is avoiding damage well and looking to escape the position.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Dee stops Ray from passing to mount.

Ray decides to take the fight back to the feet.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Nice takedown defense from Dee. No joy for Ray on that attempt.
Ray tries to clinch but Dee moves out of range.
Dee is loading up here, looking for a big counter of his own.

Ray tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Dee swivels and escapes.

Dee darts in and clinches Ray up against the cage.
Ray is working for a takedown up against the cage. He can't get it on this occasion though.

Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Dee pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Dee.

Ray drives through with a takedown into Dee's guard. Let's see what he can do from the top position.

Ray is looking to stand up but Dee won't let him.

Dee avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
Ray is fighting to break Dee's control of his arms but Dee is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.
Christopher Ray overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Dee tries to land a sweep but no joy.
We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.
Ray trying to control but Dee is working from the bottom.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.

Ray shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Dee manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.

Ray throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Dee works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
Dee not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Ray throwing strikes but missing.
Ray tries to free his leg and advance position but Dee is retaining full guard.

Dee has butterfly guard. He's looking to stand up here. He pushes Ray off him and springs to his feet nicely. The crowd applauds.
Christopher Ray is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Ray misses with a body shot.
Dee is definitely looking for the counter takedowns here.
A head kick misses from Dee.
Dee is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.

Ray shoots in for a double leg but Dee sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.
Billy Dee seems to be getting the better of the standup.
Ray tries to clinch but Dee is having none of it.

Dee feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.

Billy Dee showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin! And we move into the final round!

Dee throws a head kick that connects with a bit of head and a bit of hand.
Christopher Ray seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Dee is holding Ray down, trying to stall.

Dee is trying to improve his position.

Ray swings around for an armbar but Dee sees it coming a mile off and turns beautifully into Ray's guard.

Ray had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Dee defends it easily.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Dee accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
Ray is pulling down on Dee's head. It's preventing any offense from Dee, at least for the moment.
Dee postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

Ray has butterfly guard. He's looking to stand up here. He pushes Dee off him and springs to his feet nicely. The crowd applauds.
Ray misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
Dee drops down looking to force a counter takedown but Ray defends it well.
Dee lands with a thumping leg kick.
Ray fails with a takedown attempt.
Dee throws a head kick that misses.
Ray half commits to a counter takedown before pushing away, out of range.

Dee lands a head kick!
Dee throws a front kick that sends Ray stumbling back into the cage.
Dee moves into range and lands a nice leg kick.

Dee closes the distance and clinches.
Ray is pressed up against the cage. Dee has hold of a leg and is looking to drag Ray down to the mat. Ray avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance.
Dee swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
As Dee looks to move away, Ray throws a big counter combo but Dee just gets out of the way.

Dee scores with a nice takedown into half guard. Let's see what he's got on the ground.

Dee stands up from half guard... He's had enough of that ground malarky for the time being.

Dee darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Ray tries to strike from the bottom but it doesn't land.

Dee is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Ray defends it well.

Dee looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
Ray is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Dee's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Dee's back!

And that's the end of the fight!
Billy Dee comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Dee has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
