Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the super heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
21 - 17 - 0, fighting out of New York, Dominique Bell! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
13 - 14 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Shawn Griffin! The judges for this bout are Jack Bonds, Frank Antenori and .
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Griffin changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Bell looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better. Bell tries to bench press Griffin off him but Griffin keeps the position. Griffin scoring with punches from side control. An elbow from Griffin crashes against the mat.
The strikes coming from Griffin are missing the target in this wave of attacks. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Bell struggling a bit here. Bell is trying to get back to half guard. Griffin lands a nice forearm strike. Bell regains half guard. Bell is looking for a sweep. Griffin is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position. Griffin working over Bell with some ground and pound. Bell looks like he wants out of this position, which is understandable. Griffin is keeping good posture, landing some ground and pound. We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out! Bell avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Griffin. Bell makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Bell. Bell not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Griffin must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu. Bell utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
That's one minute gone in the round. Bell has his foot on Griffin's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Griffin works his way back into a safe position though. Griffin postures up and lands some nice ground and pound. In the pre-fight buildup videos we saw Griffin working his ground and pound in the gym. Bell has momentary wrist control but Griffin slips an elbow through the middle. Griffin lands a couple of digs.
Bell is rocked! Bell is working actively from the bottom, looking for submissions. He's escaped his hips to the side and he's going for an armbar! Griffin has his hands clasped together but Bell extends and breaks Griffin's desperate grasp, forcing a tap out due to armbar! Nice BJJ displayed there by Bell.
Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:34 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Armbar). Dominique Bell! Dominique Bell very nearly forgot to thank Vegan Gains amongst all the excitement of his win but just as the interview came to a close, he screamed their name.
