Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
2 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Willian Atkinson! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Jake Haines! The judges for this bout are Josh West, Paul Gruel and Colin Fray.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Atkinson decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard. Haines pushes Atkinson off and gets back to his feet. Atkinson stuffs the takedown attempt from Haines. Haines gets slowly back to his feet. Atkinson appeared to be looking to counter that last move with a leg kick. Atkinson throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
Haines wants to clinch up but Atkinson keeps it at a distance. Atkinson appears to be looking for a big counter. Atkinson is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Haines's half guard. Haines has managed to escape just enough to sneak back to his feet but Atkinson is on him like a limpet, forcing Haines back against the cage. The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here. Atkinson is working on a single leg takedown against the cage. Haines can't fight it off and eventually Atkinson manages to take the fight to the floor. Haines looks annoyed but at least he's managed to land in guard. Atkinson has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Haines is proving hard to escape from.
That's one minute gone in the round. Atkinson trying to control but Haines is working from the bottom. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Atkinson controlling from the top position. Haines wants to sweep here but Atkinson controlling him for the moment. Haines has his hands on Atkinson's head, controlling the position. Atkinson wants to stand but Haines is controlling his posture from full guard. Haines has Atkinson pulled in close to control his posture.
That's two minutes gone in the round. The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so. Haines is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive. Atkinson trying to control but Haines is working from the bottom.
The referee decides to stand the fighters back up. Atkinson fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Haines sprawls well initially but Atkinson persists and gets the takedown into half guard. Haines is concentrating on defense, preventing Atkinson from advancing position. Atkinson is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there. Haines gets back to full guard.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Haines preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage. Atkinson is posturing up here but Haines has hold of an arm and he's gone for an armbar! Atkinson tries to roll out but it's too tight and Atkinson has to tap! Slick submission there by Haines!
