Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Matt Askren (ranked 201 p4p, 29 weight class) and Julio Regueiro (ranked 623 p4p, 87 weight class). Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 7 - 1 - 0, fighting out of London, Matt Askren!
And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 8 - 4 - 0, fighting out of New York, Julio Regueiro!
The judges for this bout are Stewart Dunkirk, Wesley Smith and Chris Downing.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
A big left from Regueiro misses.
Askren uses good head movement to avoid the hook from Regueiro.

Regueiro let fly with a counter punch to the body but it didn't land.
A punch lands to the side of Askren 's head but he takes it in his stride.
Askren slips under a jab from Regueiro.
Regueiro throws a shot from downtown. Askren moves away and avoids it.
We've been hearing reports that Askren has been drilling takedowns in recent sessions so let's see if that has an impact on the result of this fight.
Askren bobs and weaves well there to avoid the strikes.
Regueiro throws a looping overhand right but Askren ducks down to avoid it.

Askren takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.
Askren wants to free his trapped foot but Regueiro is holding on for dear life with his legs.
We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
Regueiro throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land.

Askren tries to close the distance and clinch up but Regueiro swats him away and circles back towards the center.

Askren tries to stall but Regueiro uses the opportunity to gain a better position.

Askren keeps the fight in the clinch, despite Regueiro's efforts to push away.
Regueiro wants to get back to striking at distance but Askren won't allow it.
Askren is trying to drag Regueiro to the mat but Regueiro just about manages to keep his footing. He used the ropes to his advantage there.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
