PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Benton Velasquez (ranked 24813 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jackson Chan (ranked 24870 p4p, 0 weight class). Chan has a niggling injury. He would have liked to come in 100% fit but that's not always possible. Well, the cameraman is lingering on a pretty young lady for a bit too long there. Keep your eyes on the prize buddy or you'll miss the fighter intros!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Jackson Chan!
The judges for this bout are Kenichi Hosakawa, Tatsuya Matsuyama and Hirohito Nitta.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Chan lands an overhand right.
Chan looks winded!

Chan gets caught napping as Velasquez dives in and scores a takedown. Chan manages to retain guard.

Velasquez decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Chan, up you get!
Velasquez throws a sloppy head kick and Chan moves out of range easily.
Left hook, right uppercut from Chan.

Velasquez moves into the clinch.

Velasquez's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.

Velasquez feints and as Chan raises his hands in defense, Velasquez changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.
Chan wants to get back to his feet but Velasquez passes into half guard.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.


Velasquez decides to return to a standing position.

Velasquez clinches up with Chan and pushes him back against the cage.

Velasquez lands a nice trip takedown into half guard.

Velasquez stands up and beckons Chan to join him on the feet.

Velasquez has Chan up against the cage in a clinch.

Velasquez decides to pull guard.
Chan looks more muscular than last time we saw him. He must have been on the weights.

Chan with a flurry of punches that miss.
Velasquez has his hands on Chan's head, controlling the position.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Velasquez pushes Chan off for just long enough to get back to his feet. Very athletic spring there.
Velasquez misses with a head kick.
Chan looks to clinch

and Velasquez decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Chan's guard.

Velasquez is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.
Chan has momentary wrist control but Velasquez slips an elbow through the middle.

Velasquez gets to his feet. Chan looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son!
Chan tries to clinch but Velasquez moves out of range.
Jackson Chan is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.

Velasquez changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Chan looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.
Both fighters have adopted an aggressive gameplan on the ground!
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

Velasquez stands up.
Chan takes a nasty kick to the mid section... That should keep him thinking. Does he try and block and risk a head kick landing?

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Chan misses with a double jab

and Velasquez holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.

Velasquez manages to pull guard. Let's see whether he can land a sub off his back.

The fighters are working up against the cage. Velasquez manages to wriggle his way back to his feet, so the fighters are now clinched against the cage.

Velasquez jumps into guard, dragging Chan to the mat.
Velasquez will have to put a bit more behind his punches if he's going to do any damage from this position.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Velasquez is controlling Chan's posture.
Velasquez's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.
Velasquez manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Chan manages to get himself to full guard.

Chan misses with a combination

and Velasquez counters by moving into the clinch.
Chan tries to break the clinch but Velasquez is controlling the position.

Velasquez breaks from the clinch.
Chan throws a jab, cross combination which is slipped

and Velasquez counters with a shoot takedown. Chan fights it but they end up in guard.

The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now.
Chan scrambles and gets back to his feet.
Chan throws a left and a right that both miss

and Velasquez holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.

Velasquez successfully pulls guard.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Velasquez managing to control the position.
Chan postures up in Velasquez's guard and throws a big left but Velasquez blocks it.
Velasquez avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
Velasquez manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Chan manages to get himself to full guard.


That's four minutes gone in the round.

Velasquez decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow.
Chan avoids a lazy jab quite easily.

Chan moves into range and clinches up with Velasquez.
Chan is trying to break free.
A head punch on the inside from Chan fails to land.

Velasquez manages to break the clinch.
A telegraphed right hand from Chan misses the target.

Velasquez closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Velasquez lands in his opponent's guard.
Chan throws a couple of shots from the bottom but they don't land.
Chan really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Velasquez. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
The crowd applaud the fighters' efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Velasquez gets to his feet. Chan looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son!

Velasquez clinches up with Chan and pushes him back against the cage.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Benton Velasquez dominated that round.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.


Chan tries to clinch up.
Velasquez is looking to counter with a shot to the body.
Velasquez avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
Velasquez is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Chan can do to turn this around?

Velasquez looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into side control! Oh, that's bad for Chan!

Velasquez decides to stand back up. Velasquez steps back and let's Chan get back to his feet.
Chan takes a head kick and keeps coming.
Velasquez keeps the fight on the outside.
Velasquez stuns Chan with a nice body shot, before stepping back out of range.

Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

Velasquez thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.
Benton Velasquez overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Velasquez stands and steps away. Chan gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game.

and Velasquez counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.
Velasquez chips away with some ground and pound.

Chan tries to wriggle free to get back to his feet but he's given up his back! Oops.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

Velasquez is working for the choke. He's slipped one arm under the chin. Chan has to defend the other arm for all he's worth... but Velasquez has managed to get that arm free too and he's tightening the choke! Chan taps out and looks absolutely disgusted with himself. Velasquez doesn't care though - he's delighted!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:39 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (RNC). Benton Velasquez!
