PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Chev Chelios (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Randy Griffin (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). The key to victory for Chev Chelios has got to be keeping the fight on the feet.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Chev Chelios!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Randy Griffin!
The judges for this bout are Gwen Towbar, Alan Glass and Robert Twigg.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Griffin keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
Chelios lands with a two punch combination before moving back out of range.
Griffin keeps the fight on the outside.

Griffin gets a clinch.

Griffin gets control of Chelios's arms and successfully pulls guard. Griffin will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back.

Chelios wants to pass the guard but Griffin is keeping the position.
Griffin pulls Chelios in close to prevent any damage.

Chelios looking to sit in guard and control but Griffin gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Griffin controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Griffin stands up from Chelios's guard - Griffin perhaps looking for a knockout.

Chelios gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.

Chelios throws a couple of weedy looking strikes off his back.
Chelios looking for a sweep. Not yet Chelios, not yet.
Chelios trying to strike from the bottom but really, it's not the best position to be doing that from!
Chelios is trying to control the position but Griffin postures up.
Griffin wants to pass the guard but Chelios is keeping the position.
Griffin sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Chelios's guard.
Still in half guard, Griffin seems content to control.
Griffin's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.
Chelios is trying to get back to full guard.

Griffin stands up from half guard.
Chelios with a poor takedown

and Griffin counters with a shoot takedown. Chelios fights it but they end up in guard.
Chelios is breathing heavily.
Griffin advances to half guard.
Griffin content to control rather than advance.
I looks like Griffin might be adopting somewhat of a lay and pray gameplan here, which I'm sure won't go down too well with the paying fans in attendance... Or the ring announcers come to think of it.

Chelios is looking to improve his position.

Griffin decides he's had enough of the ground and stands up.
Chelios gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily

and Griffin counters with a takedown into full mount! That could mean trouble for Chelios!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Randy Griffin dominated that round.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!

and Griffin counters with a nice double leg into guard.

Griffin slips effortlessly into side control - very nice.
Griffin is staying tight to Chelios's torso, preventing him from escaping.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Griffin tries to advance to mount but can't.
Chelios tries to get back to his feet but has found himself mounted instead. Damn, that's gotta suck.
Chelios is desperately trying to get back to half guard.
Griffin controlling from mount.
Chelios has given up his back.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
A bit of a pause in the action here. Griffin controlling the positon.
Griffin is hanging on to Chelios's back as he tries to escape.
Griffin slows the pace down here. Having a little breather whilst he's in a dominant position, looking to rest and regain some energy, ready to go for the finish.

Despite being in the dominant position, Randy Griffin just isn't active enough and the referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Chelios misses with a takedown

and Griffin counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Griffin.

Griffin decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow.

Griffin closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.
Chelios tries to get back to his feet but has found himself mounted instead. Damn, that's gotta suck.
Griffin tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.

Griffin stands up from the dominant position. He obviously fancies his chances standing.

Chelios tries to clinch up

and Griffin counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.

Chelios looks to be working for a triangle here. Oh, it looks like he might have it! Griffin has picked Chelios up and slammed him! Chelios can't keep hold of the triangle and Griffin manages to pass to side control!
Chelios is trying to escape the position but Griffin is controlling the position.
Griffin passes to full mount! That's big trouble for Chelios!
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Randy Griffin showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. This is the final round!



Griffin closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Griffin lands in his opponent's guard.

Chelios throws a sloppy head kick and Griffin moves out of range easily.

The referee asks Griffin politely if he wouldn't mind getting on with it and actually doing something. Griffin prefers to stall for the moment though.

Griffin takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.
Chelios has given up his back here. Will Griffin look for the submission or keep pounding away?

Chev Chelios has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Chev Chelios seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Griffin moves into the clinch successfully.
The pace slowing considerably in the clinch, as Griffin takes a break from that fighting nonsense to think about the finer things in life.
Chelios wants a takedown but no success here.

Griffin has clasped his hands together around Chelios's back... aaand, he's got a takedown into side control. Nicely done.
Randy Griffin is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
Griffin has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
