PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between James Osterberg (ranked 2762 p4p, 0 weight class) and Ameri Can (ranked 3971 p4p, 0 weight class). Can has chosen For Heavy Metal we will die! as his entrance music, which hasn't gone down very well with the crowd. On his way into the cage it seems that James Osterberg has been attacked by a crazed fan! It looks like it might have been the just bleed guy! Luckily James Osterberg seems to be OK! I thought that lunatic was in prison!?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 9 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, James Osterberg!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 8 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Ameri Can!
The judges for this bout are Jack Bonds, Timothy Bukovac and Frank Antenori.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Osterberg tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Can defends well and Osterberg ends up having to push Can into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch.
Can misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from Osterberg.
Osterberg changes levels looking for a counter takedown but doesn't commit.

A left hand lands to the body for Can.
Osterberg drops to a knee looking for a takedown but Can gets the underhooks and prevents it.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for James Osterberg. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Can digs a right hand into Osterberg's ribs. Those have got to be taking their toll on Osterberg's gas tank.
Can tries a body shot but Osterberg blocks it.
Can lands punches inside but they're not really causing much damage.

Osterberg escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Can leaves Osterberg with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Osterberg shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Can pinned against the cage. Can gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
A little jabbing left from Can on the counter but it doesn't find it's target.
Can scores with a straight right hand, right through his opponent's guard.
Osterberg seems to be moving with more speed, compared to his last bout. He must have been working on that in the gym.

Osterberg walks into a stiff left hand from Can.
Osterberg uses good head movement to avoid the hook from Can.

Osterberg gets in close and instigates a clinch.
Can swings wildly with an uppercut but Osterberg uses good head movement to avoid it.
Osterberg has dropped down and is looking to force the takedown but it's defended by Can after a bit of a struggle.
A head punch blocked on the inside by Can.
Can lands a right uppercut that snaps the head of Osterberg backwards.
Osterberg is trying to work out of this bad position, with his back against the cage.
Osterberg goes for a body shot but it's blocked.

Osterberg has hold of one of Can's legs. Can is fighting the takedown attempt but Osterberg gets the trip and lands the takedown into guard.
Osterberg trying to control the position from guard on top but Can is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Can has a closed guard, preventing anything of note from happening. Perhaps he's looking to stall.
Osterberg prevents Can from getting back to his feet.

Can pulls Osterberg in close to his closed guard and prevents Osterberg from doing any damage or advancing position.
Can is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.
Osterberg trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.

We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.
Osterberg working in close now, lands a nice elbow to the side of Can's head.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Osterberg postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
Osterberg is working Can over from the guard. He should look to pass the guard and do a little more damage with these strikes.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Can seems keen to control Osterberg's posture.

Can is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Can manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Osterberg manages to get himself to full guard.

Can pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Osterberg is keeping the position for now.
Can is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.

Can avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
Can trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.

Osterberg looking for subs off his back but Can has passed one foot through into half guard.

Osterberg wants to control but Can is keeping busy.
Can is looking to advance position but Osterberg won't allow it.

Osterberg looking for submissions from an awkward position here.

Osterberg is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Can pulls his head out easily.
Can controlling the pace.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Osterberg is trying to control but can't.
Can is just sitting in half guard, waiting for something to happen.
Let's hope that Can has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.


Osterberg circles away from the clinch attempt.

Osterberg drives through with a takedown into Can's guard. Let's see what he can do from the top position.
Can is pulling down on Osterberg's head. It's preventing any offense from Osterberg, at least for the moment.
Osterberg pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Can is keeping the position for now.
Can trying to control the position here.
Can lands a beautiful sweep and he's now moved into his opponent's guard.

Can stands and throws Osterberg's legs to the side, diving into side control.
Osterberg is not content to let Can control the position.
Osterberg seems a little lost for a moment, as Can dominates the positioning.

Can decides to stand up, so the ref orders Osterberg to his feet.
Can tests Osterberg's chin there with a solid looking shot.

Nice sprawl there from Can as Osterberg shoots in.
Can misses with a low kick.
Osterberg shoots for a double leg takedown but Can sprawls well. He's pushed Osterberg's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
Can stuffs the takedown attempt from Osterberg. Osterberg gets slowly back to his feet.
Can is loading up here, looking for a big counter of his own.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for James Osterberg. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Osterberg changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Can tries to avoid it but Osterberg manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Can to the ground. Can escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.

Ameri Can seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Can thuds a left hand into Osterberg's body.
Can has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Can tries a head kick but it misses.
Can getting the better of the striking in that exchange.
Can thows a left - swing and a miss!
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Can scores with a three punch combo!

Can fakes a couple of low kicks, before throwing one on the third attempt. It connects and Osterberg has to reset his feet before getting ready to engage.

Osterberg gets the takedown into side control.
Can is positioning himself to get back to half guard.
Osterberg trying to control the action but Can is working from the bottom.
Can is trying to get back to half guard.
Can managing to avoid any damage from the strikes thrown by Osterberg.

Can is looking for a sweep.
Can is trying to get back to half guard. He's pushing on Osterberg's leg. He's managed it. Nice work.
Can is looking for a sweep. Osterberg is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Osterberg tries to pass the half guard into mount. Can knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.
Osterberg seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Can does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.

Ameri Can showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! This is the final round!


Osterberg dives in for a single leg takedown but Can sprawls and the fighters end up clinched against the cage.
Can scores with a jab to the jaw of his opponent.
Osterberg uses good footwork to avoid the strikes from Can.
Osterberg avoids a punch combination nicely.
Can dances in quickly and lands a nice inside leg kick on Osterberg. That did some damage!
James Osterberg is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Can throws a leg kick but Osterberg checks it.
Can blocks the body kick.
Can misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from Osterberg.
Osterberg appears to be looking for a counter takedown.

Osterberg closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Osterberg lands in his opponent's guard.

Osterberg working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Can doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Can manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Can slips effortlessly into side control - very nice.

Can wants to stand but Osterberg has hold of a leg and an arm, so he's trapped for now.

Osterberg tries to roll over but Can keeps him under control.
Can is figuring out what he wants to do next.

Osterberg won't allow Can to pass to mount.
Osterberg wants to improve his position but Can is controlling well.
Can is just sitting in half guard, waiting for something to happen.

Can is looking to advance position but Osterberg won't allow it.
Can takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.
Ameri Can has got the better of the ground game so far.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.
Osterberg fails to land with a series of punches.
Osterberg stumbles momentarily as he takes a strong leg kick from Can.
Can fakes a couple of low kicks, before throwing one on the third attempt. It connects and Osterberg has to reset his feet before getting ready to engage.

Osterberg decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.
Osterberg stops Can from getting back to his feet.
Can is trying to get back to full guard.

Can is still trying to improve position.
Osterberg is looking to advance position but Can won't allow it.
James Osterberg has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Can is not content to let Osterberg control the position.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Can is holding on to half guard well.

And that's the end of the fight!
Ameri Can comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Can has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.

Ameri Can spent the whole post fight interview bigging himself up. It didn't go down that well with the fans after a while as they thought it was a bit arrogant.
James Osterberg spoke after the fight, saying 'No worries! Everyone knows that my opponent here has a bad habit of testing positive for PEDs and illegal recreational drugs, so I'm confident this fight will soon be ruled a "No Contest." Thanks everyone for continuing to support those of us who fight clean.'.
