Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
3 - 1 - 0, fighting out of New York, Exar Sotomayor! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
3 - 2 - 0, fighting out of New York, Jingzhong Xin! The judges for this bout are Chad Campbell, Anthony Taglia and Columbo Gatti.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Sotomayor slaps away a takedown attempt from Xin, before circling back to the center of the mat. As Xin looks to move away, Sotomayor throws a big counter combo but Xin just gets out of the way. Oooh a lovely combination from Sotomayor sends Xin down but not out. Sotomayor dives into side control looking to finish.
It looks like Jingzhong Xin has been cut. Xin tries to bench press Sotomayor off him but Sotomayor keeps the position. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here. Sotomayor decides to stand back up. Sotomayor steps back and let's Xin get back to his feet. Sotomayor misses with a wild combination.
Oooh a lovely combination from Sotomayor sends Xin down but not out. Sotomayor dives into side control looking to finish.
Xin is rocked! Xin is moving his hips around well on the bottom and has managed to get back to half guard. Xin looking to work for a kimura from the bottom. Sotomayor decides to stand up. Wow, both these guys are really going for it! Xin slips a jab and a cross from Sotomayor.
Sotomayor throws a series of punches but Xin moves out of range. Sotomayor misses with a two punch combination.
Sloppy strikes from Sotomayor. Those never looked like landing. Xin takes a jab right on the nose. That must have hurt but he shrugs his shoulders and looks to return the favor. Xin tries to score a power double leg takedown but Sotomayor sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Xin somewhat. Sotomayor was looking to counter that move with a punch but didn't quite pull the trigger.
That's one minute gone in the round. The crowd cheers as Sotomayor lands an impressive looking overhand right. Xin doesn't seem phased though. Sotomayor displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Xin. Exar Sotomayor has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Jingzhong Xin. Xin shoots in for a takedown but Sotomayor shows good takedown defense. Exar Sotomayor is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs. Xin takes one to the chin there. Some wild striking there from Sotomayor.
Sotomayor looks to land a combination but Xin avoids it well. Xin darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard. Sotomayor is breathing heavily. The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Xin connects with a nice short shot to Sotomayor's temple. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Xin seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime. Sotomayor tries to kick Xin off but Xin keeps his base steady and stays in half guard. Sotomayor taking some punishment here, with Xin in his half guard. Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Xin is nestled in close to Sotomayor, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure. Xin lands a big shot. The thud that echoes around the arena is like music to the fans' ears. Xin landing with strikes to the body and head, softening up his opponent.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Xin drops an elbow to the side of Sotomayor's head. Sotomayor is trying to stand up here but Xin is controlling him well. Sotomayor on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Sotomayor tries to get out of the position. Xin landing with strikes to the body and head, softening up his opponent.
Sotomayor is rocked! Xin is sitting in half guard. He's postured up and lands a nice elbow. Oh, Sotomayor is hurt! He's hurt bad - Xin fires away with more strikes and the referee jumps in to save Sotomayor from any more punishment! Congratulations to Xin! Great finish!
