PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between David Kozma (ranked 3850 p4p, 407 weight class) and James Freeman (ranked 4540 p4p, 439 weight class). Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, David Kozma!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 5 - 7 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, James Freeman!
The judges for this bout are Paul Aken, Radbod Blank and Saam Ante.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Freeman shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Kozma napping and manages to drive through into side control!
Kozma striking from the bottom but nothing landed.
Kozma is positioning himself to get back to half guard.
Freeman wants to stand but Kozma has his arm trapped.
Kozma wants to control but Freeman postures up.
Freeman wants to stand but Kozma is controlling his arm.
You can see the frustration on Kozma's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
Kozma sneaks a leg under to get back to half guard.
Freeman wants to get back to his feet.
Kozma's coaches at Ferocious beast have been working on his defensive grappling in preparation for this fight so let's see if he can get out of this tricky position.

Freeman is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Kozma doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Freeman.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Kozma manages to get to full guard.

Freeman wanted to stand there but Kozma had control of the position.

Freeman thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.
Freeman wants to get up but he can't break Kozma's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.

Kozma is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.

Kozma is looking for a triangle but Freeman pushes his legs off easily.
Freeman wants to stand but Kozma is controlling his posture from full guard.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.

Kozma looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Kozma is doing well to control the posture of his opponent and prevent any damage.
Freeman would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.
Kozma is controlling Freeman's posture.
Freeman wants to get up but he can't break Kozma's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.
The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.

Kozma gets caught napping as Freeman dives in and scores a takedown. Kozma manages to retain guard.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Kozma is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Freeman defends well.
Freeman has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Kozma is proving hard to escape from.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.



Freeman shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Freeman showed some decent athleticism there.
Freeman tries to stand and escape but Kozma is controlling the position.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Freeman is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Kozma defends it well.
Kozma moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.

Freeman is fighting to break Kozma's control of his arms but Kozma is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.

Kozma working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Freeman doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Freeman manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Kozma has a closed guard, preventing Freeman from standing up.

Kozma had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Freeman defends it easily.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Freeman would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.
The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
Freeman tries to clinch there but Kozma circles away.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Freeman feints and as Kozma raises his hands in defense, Freeman changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.
Kozma is trying to keep Freeman in close.
Kozma will have to put a bit more behind his punches if he's going to do any damage from this position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

James Freeman showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's time! Back to the action! This is the final round!


Kozma swings and misses with a hook to the body.

Freeman looking for a takedown here - he's got it.
Freeman is looking to stand up but Kozma won't let him.
Freeman is using up a lot of energy trying to get back to his feet. Perhaps he should improve his position first.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Kozma pulls Freeman in to control the position.

Freeman drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Freeman jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.
Freeman wants to get up but he can't break Kozma's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

Kozma gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.
Freeman wants to stand but Kozma has a closed guard, so he can't escape.

Kozma is looking to cinch up a triangle. Freeman throws the leg off to one side though and gets in tight to Kozma's body to avoid the submission. Kozma has instead reached around Freeman's neck and now has a guillotine! Oh, this is biiiig trouble! Kozma arches his back and squeezes and forces the tap from his hapless opponent.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:51 of round 3, we have a winner by way of Submission (Guillotine). David Kozma!
David Kozma decided to go for the less than humble approach in his post fight interview, telling everyone how he is going to conquer the world. The crowd seemed to like it when really that sort of approach could have gone either way.
