PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Lamont Banner (ranked 3037 p4p, 331 weight class) and Magic Johnstone (ranked 4157 p4p, 423 weight class). Banner comes to the cage accompanied by Goin' Baby- DaBaby. Fingers crossed for an exciting fight - I'm sure both fighters are looking for a nice under the table bonus!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Lamont Banner!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Magic Johnstone!
The judges for this bout are Dillan Fox, William Peck and Elvis Blanc.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Banner fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Johnstone sprawls well initially but Banner persists and gets the takedown into half guard.

Johnstone manages to escape and get back to his feet!
Johnstone fails with an attempt to clinch.
Banner gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily
and Johnstone counters with a series of strikes. Banner will be more careful next time no doubt.
Banner fails in his attempt to clinch.
Nice sprawl there from Banner as Johnstone shoots in.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Banner lands a jab-cross combination.
Banner fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Banner is breathing heavily.

Johnstone throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Banner tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Johnstone is in Banner's guard.
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.

Banner is looking for a triangle but Johnstone pushes his legs off easily.

Johnstone decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Banner, up you get!

Johnstone scores with a jab to the jaw.
Banner goes for a double leg but Johnstone avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Johnstone continues to drive forward.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Lamont Banner. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Johnstone fails miserably with a takedown attempt.

Johnstone closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Johnstone lands in his opponent's guard.

Johnstone postures up and scores with a shot to the body and a follow up elbow to the head.
Johnstone engaging in some classic timewasting tactics.

Johnstone drops back looking for a leg! Banner is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Banner manages to kick Johnstone off! Johnstone jumps back into Banner's guard.

Johnstone controls the pace of the fight for a moment.
Johnstone tries to free his leg and advance position but Banner is retaining full guard.
Johnstone not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.
Banner is trying to control the position from the bottom.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.

Johnstone clinches with his opponent.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Johnstone lands a knee to the head.


It looks like Lamont Banner has been cut.
Banner stalling here - the referee won't stand for too much of that.
Banner struggles to land a body shot inside as Johnstone controls his hands.

Johnstone breaks the clinch.
Banner looks to have improved his striking defense since last time we saw him fight.
Banner misses with a body kick.

Banner gets in close and instigates a clinch.

Johnstone is trying to trip Banner. He has hold of a leg but Banner is hopping around, keeping his balance for the moment. Johnstone persists though and gets the takedown into guard.
Johnstone chips away with some ground and pound.
Johnstone controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.
Let's hope that Johnstone has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Magic Johnstone dominated that round.
The cut man is working on Lamont Banner's cut.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.


Johnstone lands a front kick.
Banner takes a jab right on the kisser.
Johnstone takes a step back and watches a body kick go sailing past his mid section.

Banner tries to keep at a distance but Johnstone has taken the fight into the clinch.
Johnstone working some nice short punches in the clinch.

Johnstone breaks the clinch.
Johnstone has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Banner misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from Johnstone.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Banner looking to take his opponent's legs away with the low kicks.
Johnstone displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Banner.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Johnstone blocks a head kick by Banner.

Johnstone shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Banner defends it nicely.

Johnstone drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.
Johnstone forces his way into half guard.
Johnstone slows the pace down in half guard.

Johnstone is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.

The referee calls for the fighters to work.

Johnstone stands, ready to strike. The ref makes him back up and allows Banner to get to his feet.

The fight moves into the clinch position.

Johnstone ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Johnstone no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Johnstone pushes Banner off for just long enough to get back to his feet. Very athletic spring there.

Johnstone has Banner up against the cage in a clinch.
Johnstone with the Thai clinch, lands a knee to the head.
Johnstone trying to land knees to the body.
Johnstone fails to pull guard.

Johnstone pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Johnstone darts in looking for a takedown but Banner gets double underhooks and turns Johnstone into the cage.
Banner drops down looking for a counter takedown but Johnstone sprawls and moves away.
Lamont Banner has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Magic Johnstone.
Johnstone tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.

Banner clinches up with Johnstone and pushes him back against the cage.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Johnstone escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.

Banner dives in and scores a takedown into Johnstone's guard.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Banner throws a strike but Johnstone rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.

Johnstone lands a couple of decent looking shots.

In the pre-fight buildup videos we saw Johnstone working his ground and pound in the gym. So far it seems to be working well.
Johnstone pushes down on Banner's leg and manages to get into half guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Johnstone takes advantage of the dominant position to land a couple of big hammer fists.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Magic Johnstone showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin! This is the final round!



Banner gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Johnstone to score an easy takedown into full guard.

Johnstone gets to his feet. Banner looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son!

Johnstone closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.
Banner wants to get back to his feet but Johnstone is dominant here and he's now got Banner's back!
Johnstone controlling the position well here. Banner rolled but Johnstone kept the hooks locked in and stayed in the dominant position.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Johnstone is not going to allow Banner to sit and survive in this position.

Johnstone looking for the rear naked choke. And he's got it! Banner taps!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:34 of round 3, we have a winner by way of Submission (RNC). Magic Johnstone!
Magic Johnstone decided to go for the less than humble approach in his post fight interview, telling everyone how he is going to conquer the world. The crowd seemed to like it when really that sort of approach could have gone either way.
Lamont Banner was interviewed post fight and said 'I'll be back. This is just a set back in my journey to the belt.'.
