PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Ruslan Karelin (ranked 22725 p4p, 522 weight class) and Paul Bunyon (ranked 2852 p4p, 285 weight class). Rumors backstage are that the fighters have been paid to keep it standing but we know that would never happen in MMA!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of London, Ruslan Karelin!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 5 - 0, fighting out of New York, Paul Bunyon!
The judges for this bout are Dmitry Maklakov, Konstantin Menshow and Sergei Dronov.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Bunyon throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Bunyon misses the jab.

Karelin clinches.
Bunyon blocks an uppercut.
Bunyon tries to work over Karelin's body with a swooping hook but it only glances the target.
Bunyon is trying to break the clinch but Karelin is controlling him.
Bunyon tries a body shot but Karelin blocks it.
Karelin stalling against the cage.
Karelin taking a break, stalling in the clinch.
Bunyon is trying to slow down the pace of the fight but Karelin is keeping busy.
Karelin lands with a light punch inside.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Karelin gets double underhooks and manages to take the fight to the ground.
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.
Karelin wants to control from the top but Bunyon keeps moving.

It looks like Paul Bunyon has been cut.

A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Karelin accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

Karelin wants to pass the guard but Bunyon is keeping the position.
Karelin is working Bunyon over from the guard. He should look to pass the guard and do a little more damage with these strikes.

Bunyon throws some sloppy strikes off his back.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Bunyon is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.
Karelin is in close to Bunyon's body, working some short punches and elbows.
Karelin seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Bunyon can do anything to dispel that myth.
Bunyon really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Karelin. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Bunyon wants to stand and escape but Karelin is having none of it.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

Karelin manages to get an easy takedown there - catching Bunyon on his heels. He'll look to pass Bunyon's guard now, I'm sure.

Karelin is moving around nicely and scores here with a single head shot.

Bunyon looks to throw the jab but Karelin is out of range.
Karelin half commits to a counter takedown before pushing away, out of range.

It seemed like Bunyon was going to counter with the hook but didn't fully commit to it.
Bunyon throws the left hand but Karelin avoids the punch easily.
Bunyon takes a body punch but keeps moving.
Karelin lands a nice shot that snaps Bunyon's head back.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

and Bunyon counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw.
Karelin dips down and scores with a jab to the body.
Karelin misses with a wild body shot.
Karelin is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Bunyon can do to turn this around?

A jab from Karelin does it's job there.
Bunyon's corner calls for a 1-2. Bunyon obliges with the 1 part as he scores the single shot and moves back out of range.


It looks like Ruslan Karelin has been cut.
Karelin lands a straight punch to the body, keeping Bunyon at a distance.
Karelin fakes a head shot and lands one to the body.
Karelin bobbing and weaving, closes the distance and lands a hook to the side of Bunyon's head.
Karelin throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
A countering left hand to the body from Bunyon misses.
Karelin lands a slapping body shot.

Karelin shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in side control! That's better than Karelin was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.

Karelin laying and praying for a moment but Bunyon takes advantage and regains half guard.
Karelin working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that.


The cut above Paul Bunyon's eye is starting to cause him problems now.
Karelin slips a nice elbow through Bunyon's hands, connecting with Bunyon's forehead.
Bunyon tries to roll over but Karelin keeps him under control.
Karelin is scoring with some nice ground and pound from the dominant position.


Paul Bunyon's cut is absolute horrible now. This looks like something out of a horror film with blood covering both fighters.
Karelin is nestled in close to Bunyon, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Bunyon has hold of Karelin's hands but Karelin slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow.

The referee calls the doctor in to look at Paul Bunyon's cut. Oh no, the doctor has called an end to the bout!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:24 of round 2, we have a winner by way of TKO (Cut). Ruslan Karelin!
Our winner, Ruslan Karelin, made sure he spent some time buttering up the crowd during his post fight interview, which will no doubt bring him a few more fans.
