PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Nomor Gai (ranked 1811 p4p, 211 weight class) and Oscar Larraza (ranked 2172 p4p, 249 weight class). Chooooooooon! I think Gai might be my favorite fighter, now he's come out to Alice Cooper No More Mr. Nice Guy. Nomor Gai has the edge in experience - let's see if he can make that count tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the lightweight championship of the world!
Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 20 - 8 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Nomor Gai!
And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 7 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Oscar Larraza!
The judges for this bout are Dean Styles, Anthony Taglia and Lou da Vinci.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Larraza takes a kick to the side of the head.
Larraza misses with a hook
and Gai counters with a one-two to the body.
Larraza swings wildly with a couple of big hooks
and Gai makes the exchange count by landing a cracking kick to the body. Larraza really felt that one!
Gai lands a jab, followed by a cross and another cross, as Larraza backs up against the cage.
Oscar Larraza seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Gai explodes with a nice body kick and back out of range. Nice work.
Gai blocks a jab.
Larraza falls off balance throwing a combination

and Gai counters with a nice double leg into guard.

Larraza scrambles and gets back to his feet.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Larraza swings wildly with a couple of big hooks
and Gai counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw.
Larraza misses with a shot to the body
and Gai counters with a left and a right that stings Larraza.
Larraza shoots in but doesn't get the takedown

and Gai counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Gai.
Gai gets an overhook and lands an elbow to the side of the head.
Larraza tries to pull guard but can't drag his opponent to the mat. Gai just stands there and leans against the cage.
Larraza fails to pull guard.
Nomor Gai has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Oscar Larraza.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Larraza goes for a takedown in the clinch but Gai prevents it.
Larraza looks winded!
Larraza fails to pull guard.
Larraza is trying to pull guard but Gai turns him against the cage and we stay in the clinch.

Gai works for the underhooks and manages to get a trip takedown into guard.
Gai makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard.
Gai working in close now, lands a nice elbow to the side of Larraza's head.
Gai's corner is telling him to maintain position.
Gai scores with a decent looking elbow strike.

Larraza looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
Gai is working Larraza over from the guard. He should look to pass the guard and do a little more damage with these strikes.
Gai looks to be in better condition than last time we saw him fight. Obviously he's been working hard on his cardio.
Larraza can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Gai controls the pace.
Gai landing some decent shots from guard.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Gai showing good wrestling skills to control the position.
Gai continues to stall.
Larraza looking to hit a scissor sweep but Gai is one step ahead there.
Gai throws a big elbow that misses.
Hammerfist, elbow! yells Gai's corner. There ya go! There ya go!

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Gai chips away with some ground and pound.
Gai content to strike from guard, landing some decent shots.
Larraza looking for a sweep. Not yet Larraza, not yet.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Gai throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent.

Gai lands a nice shot whilst sitting in his opponent's guard.
Gai looking to control the position here, rather than advance.
Larraza tries to land a sweep but no joy.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Gai postures up in Larraza's guard and throws a big left but Larraza blocks it.
Gai has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.
Gai is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.
Gai advances position into side control!
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Gai working the head with strikes.
Larraza is working to avoid the ground and pound but Gai connects with a decent elbow.
Gai cracks Larraza with an elbow. That is naaassty.
Gai lands a knee to the body and follows it up with some ground and pound to the head. That will wear Larraza down.
Gai is moving around in side control but his primary objective seems to be to maintain the position.
Gai advances to full mount.
Larraza working to try and regain half guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Nomor Gai dominated that round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Larraza goes for a double leg but Gai avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Gai continues to drive forward.
Gai shuffles to his left behind two crisp jabs. Larraza eats them both and turns towards Gai to reposition himself and eats a stinging right hand-left hook combo.
Larraza throws a jab, cross combination which is slipped
and Gai counters with a flying knee. Nice.


Larraza is rocked!
Gai lands with a right that hurts Larraza. Larraza looks to clinch but Gai throws a short knee that drops Larraza. This one is all over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 0:17 of round 2, we have a winner by way of TKO (Punch and Knee). Nomor Gai!
Nomor Gai retains his lightweight title!
During a confident post fight interview, Nomor Gai thanked all his fans. He seemed very genuine when describing how motivated his fans keep him.
