Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Simon Vale (ranked 1118 p4p, 144 weight class) and Maki Pulu (ranked 596 p4p, 75 weight class). Vale kept the crowd waiting but all that was forgotten when his ring entrance music started. The incomparable musical genius that is Motorhead-Iron Fist . Pulu has chosen Alive as his entrance music. Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
26 - 26 - 0, fighting out of New York, Simon Vale! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
33 - 22 - 0, fighting out of New York, Maki Pulu! The judges for this bout are Alan Glass, Stewart Dunkirk and Chris Downing.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Vale fakes a jab and then connects with a hook. Pulu jabbing away but nothing is landing. Pulu fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Vale sprawls well initially but Pulu persists and gets the takedown into half guard. Vale keeping control of the leg, stopping his opponent passing to mount. Vale makes some distance and scrambles quickly back to his feet. Nice work! Pulu bobs and weaves well there to avoid the strikes. Pulu avoids the body shot from Vale.
Vale lands with an overhand left. We've been hearing reports that Vale has been drilling takedowns in recent sessions so let's see if that has an impact on the result of this fight. This fight brought to you by 5M nutrition - it's mmmmm tasty. Nice jab by Pulu.
It looks like Simon Vale has been cut. We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out! Pulu misses with a straight right. Vale misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Pulu. Nice shot by Vale. Pulu uses decent footwork to sidestep a right hand from Vale. Pulu misses with a head kick.
Vale went nuts there looking for a big combo counter but none of the flurry connected.
That's one minute gone in the round. Vale defending well as Pulu loads up on a big left hand. Vale throws a jab when Pulu was well out of range. Pulu slips a jab from Vale. Pulu walks straight into a jab right on the nose. That one stung - he's blinking and trying to clear his head. Pulu uses good footwork to avoid the strikes from Vale. Simon Vale seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Pulu connects with a combination that backs up Vale into the cage. Pulu lands a flurry of punches that gets past Vale's guard. Vale is down and the referee has seen enough. It is all over! Pulu bursts into tears - this win obviously means a huge amount to him.
Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:26 of round 1, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Maki Pulu! An out of breath Maki Pulu thanked his loyal fans in his post fight interview, giving them credit for his success over the course of his career.
