PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Nathanial Mcconnell (ranked 6523 p4p, 0 weight class) and Sebastian Smith (ranked 4867 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Nathanial Mcconnell!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Sebastian Smith!
The judges for this bout are Bruno Lombardi, Jonathan Paton and Joseph Jones.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Smith connects with a body shot.
Smith closes this distance looking for a takedown but Mcconnell circles away.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Mcconnell enables Smith to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Mcconnell manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.
Smith trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
Smith scoring with punches to the head and body.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Smith is pushing down on Mcconnell's leg trying to pass to half guard. Mcconnell is fighting to maintain full guard but Smith has managed to sneak the leg through.
Smith working to pass to mount. He's got his hand pressing down on Mcconnell's thigh. Mcconnell counters though and makes it back to full guard.
Smith wants to get up but he can't break Mcconnell's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Mcconnell works his way to full guard. Good work.
Mcconnell is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Smith trying to control the position from guard on top but Mcconnell is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Smith postures up.
Mcconnell is striking off his back. Smith thinks nothing of it though and passes easily into half guard.
Mcconnell won't allow Smith to pass to mount.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Mcconnell punching from the bottom.
Smith drops an elbow to the side of Mcconnell's head.
Smith tries to stand but his hand is stuck under Mcconnell.
Smith lands a big shot. The thud that echoes around the arena is like music to the fans' ears.
Smith seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Smith passes the half guard and he's now in mount! Big trouble for Mcconnell!

Smith moves into side control, trying to work for a kimura. That looks painful! Will he finish!!?? No, Mcconnell has worked his arm free - good work by Mcconnell!
Smith controls the position.
Smith is putting a hurting on Mcconnell here, landing some big shots from side control.
Mcconnell is looking for a sweep.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Mcconnell takes a couple of big shots there - the referee warns him that he has to defend himself better.
Mcconnell could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.
Smith tries to stand but Mcconnell is controlling his head.
Mcconnell tries to strike from the bottom but misses.
Smith is looking to take a break and control but Mcconnell is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up.
Smith tries to move to full mount but Mcconnell actually manages to regain half guard.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Mcconnell is looking to get full guard. It looks like he might be successful but at the last minute Smith jumps into side control!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Sebastian Smith dominated that round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Mcconnell lands a jab, followed by a cross and another cross, as Smith backs up against the cage.

Smith rushes Mcconnell and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.
Mcconnell fails to land with a short punch on the inside.
Smith avoids a wild elbow strike from Mcconnell.

Smith manages to break the clinch.
Mcconnell leaves Smith with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Smith swats away the attempt to clinch by Mcconnell.
Mcconnell moves out of the way of the counter high kick fromSmith.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Mcconnell looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.
Smith pushes Mcconnell off looking to stand but Mcconnell dives back in and keeps control.

Mcconnell prevents Smith from improving his position.
Smith trying to control but Mcconnell postures up.
Smith keeping control of the leg, stopping his opponent passing to mount.

Mcconnell is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Smith doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Mcconnell.

Smith is trying to defend against the ground and pound but Mcconnell scores with a couple of nice shots.

Mcconnell is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.
Smith manages to get to full guard.

Mcconnell postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
Mcconnell preventing the sweep.

Smith looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
Mcconnell showing good wrestling skills to control the position.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.
Smith looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Mcconnell is fending him off so far but Smith persists. Nope, Mcconnell circles away and we're back to standing.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.

Smith closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.
Mcconnell tries to escape but Smith is in control.
Smith laying and praying for a moment but Mcconnell takes advantage and regains half guard.
Mcconnell pushes Smith off looking to stand but Smith dives back in and keeps control.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Smith wants to pass to mount but Mcconnell is defending the position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Nathanial Mcconnell dominated that second round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. This is the final round!


Smith ducks under a wild hook from Mcconnell.

Smith fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Mcconnell to the ground. Smith is now in Mcconnell's guard.
Smith wants to control from the top but Mcconnell keeps moving.
Mcconnell is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.
Mcconnell is looking to stand back up... there's a bit of a scramble and Smith dives into side control.
Sebastian Smith has got the better of the ground game so far.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Mcconnell wants to get back to his feet.

Smith goes for an armbar! This could be all over! Wait, no, Mcconnell rolls with the submission and now he's on top in Smith's guard! Nice work there by Mcconnell!

Smith is trying to keep Mcconnell in close.
Mcconnell lands a couple of decent looking shots.
Smith is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Smith is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Smith is just content to waste time from the top position. Mcconnell takes advantage of the situation and regains full guard.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Smith distracts Mcconnell with his right hand and drops a big elbow with his other arm.
Smith working in close now, lands a nice elbow to the side of Mcconnell's head.

Mcconnell is looking for a triangle but Smith pushes his legs off easily.
Mcconnell is looking to stand back up... there's a bit of a scramble and Smith dives into side control.
Mcconnell gives up the full mount - oops, sloppy defensive grappling there!
Mcconnell might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Smith looking to control and managing it successfully.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Smith connects with a couple of good shots from mount.
Mcconnell is in all sorts of trouble here.
Mcconnell takes a big shot to the head but keeps on trying to improve his position.
Smith in mount throwing good strikes here, bouncing his opponent's head off the canvas.
Smith cracks Mcconnell with a nasty head shot there - the crowd let out an audible gasp there, as the noise reverberated around the arena.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Smith jumps to the side looking to secure the arm triangle…. Ooooh, that looks tight… Mcconnell is gargling but he's managed to escape! Nice work there by Mcconnell and Smith has given up the dominant position trying to land that submission.
Mcconnell trying his best to control but Smith has mounted him.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Smith won't let Mcconnell get back to his feet... He wants to keep the fight where it is for now.
Smith can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Mcconnell is looking to escape.
Smith landing strikes from the mount.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Smith is in the full mount, landing strikes.
Smith takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.

And that's the end of the fight!
Sebastian Smith comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Smith has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
