PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Olen Curry (ranked 21503 p4p, 0 weight class) and Tommy Gunn (ranked 4849 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Olen Curry!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Tommy Gunn!
The judges for this bout are Paul Gruel, Roger Salmon and Jeff Smith.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Curry tries to keep at a distance but Gunn has taken the fight into the clinch.

Curry has moved round to his opponent's back and is looking for a suplex! Oh snap! He's tossed Gunn clear over his head and slammed him to the mat!
Gunn tries to escape but Curry has the hooks in and won't let him break free.
Gunn breaks Curry's hooks off and manages to turn into his guard.
Gunn must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
Gunn wants to control from the top but Curry keeps moving.
Curry will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
Gunn wanted to stand there but Curry had control of the position.

Gunn gets to his feet - Curry follows without any prompting.

Gunn rushes Curry and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.

Curry really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.

Curry closes the distance and pushes Gunn back into the cage.

Curry jumps guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Gunn trying to control the position from guard on top but Curry is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Gunn works a leg free and moves into half guard.

Gunn is trying to work for a kimura but Curry is defending well.
Curry flails away from the bottom but he's not doing any damage.

Gunn is looking to take a break and control but Curry is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Curry throws a strike from the bottom that misses.
Gunn tries to pass the half guard into mount. Curry knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.

Gunn decides to stand up.

Curry bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Gunn is looking to reverse the position.

Curry working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.
Gunn tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Curry wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.

Gunn sneaks a leg under to get back to half guard.
Gunn throws a strike from the bottom that misses.
Curry is taking a breather. Gunn says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.
Gunn trying to hold on to Curry's head to control him but Curry postures up.
Gunn is looking to escape.
Curry is just sitting in half guard, waiting for something to happen.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Gunn gets back to full guard.
Gunn can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Curry controls the pace.
Curry seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Gunn for as long as he can get away with.
Gunn throws a couple of shots from the bottom but they don't land.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.

Gunn shoots in and scores a nice double leg takedown into half guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Gunn shoots in looking for a takedown. Curry tries to sprawl out of it but Gunn keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Curry manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.

Curry throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Gunn tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Curry is in Gunn's guard.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Gunn thows some rabbit punches from the bottom but they don't do any damage.

Gunn doesn't do any damage with a couple of strikes from the bottom.
Gunn wants to sweep but no luck.

Curry is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.
Tommy Gunn has got the better of the ground game so far.
Gunn trying to strike off his back.
Curry throws a big elbow that misses.
Curry engaging in some classic timewasting tactics.
Curry postures up.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
Gunn has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

Curry shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Curry showed some decent athleticism there.

Gunn has managed to escape just enough to sneak back to his feet but Curry is on him like a limpet, forcing Gunn back against the cage.

Gunn wants a takedown but no success here.
Curry struggles to land a body shot inside as Gunn controls his hands.

Curry breaks the clinch.
Gunn fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Curry avoids it really well and circles away.
Olen Curry has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Tommy Gunn.

Curry closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Curry lands in his opponent's guard.
Gunn tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Curry postures up and lands some nice ground and pound.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Gunn is on top in guard.


That's four minutes gone in the round.

Curry working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Gunn doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Gunn manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Curry has his foot on Gunn's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Gunn works his way back into a safe position though.

Curry bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Gunn's guard.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that Olen Curry will probably get the nod.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business. This is the final round!

Gunn throws his opponent off and manages to get back to his feet! Nicely done!

Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

Gunn postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Curry is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Gunn, into his guard.

Curry is working the ground and pound from guard. He might want to try advancing position though to get more of an impact.

Gunn striking off his back, scoring a few points.

Gunn looks to be working for a triangle here. Oh, it looks like he might have it! Curry has picked Gunn up and slammed him! Gunn can't keep hold of the triangle and Curry manages to pass to side control!

Gunn is still trying to improve position.
Gunn is putting a lot of effort into getting back to his feet here.
Check out the look on Curry's face as he threw that strike - that's one determined fighter!

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

Curry thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.

Curry tries for a kimura but Gunn is defending well.

Curry tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Curry has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!
Gunn wants to escape from the position here - easier said than done!

Gunn tries to get back to his feet but has found himself mounted instead. Damn, that's gotta suck.
Curry trying to control but he's not successful this time.
Gunn is looking to get to half guard.
Curry landing strikes from the mount.
Curry looking to control and managing it successfully.
Gunn tries to reverse the position but Curry maintains control.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Curry blocks Gunn's feeble attempts to strike from the bottom.
Gunn tries to improve his position but instead Curry has taken his back!
Gunn is trying to stand back up.
You can see the frustration on Gunn's face… He knows he is in trouble unless he improves his position sooner rather than later.
Gunn takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Curry has his hand under the chin of his opponent looking for the choke. He's nearly got it! This one could be all over! But no, Gunn has freed his hand and lives to survive another… well, another couple of seconds at least!
Gunn grimaces as he takes a shot to the body.

And that's the end of the fight!
Olen Curry showed his dominance in that final round.
I think Curry has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
