Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Santiago Costa (ranked 238 p4p, 37 weight class) and Sergei Martynov (ranked 333 p4p, 50 weight class). Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the ring.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the middleweight championship of the world! Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
9 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Santiago Costa! And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
12 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Sergei Martynov! The judges for this bout are Daniel Franklin, Robert Twigg and Gwen Towbar.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Martynov misses with an uppercut. Costa saw that one coming. Some wild striking there from Martynov.
Martynov swings widly with a right hand
and Costa counters with a nice uppercut. Martynov lands a glancing blow to the side of Costa's head. Martynov keeping a good distance there, avoiding the body shot.
Martynov misses with a two punch combination.
Costa swings and misses with a hook to the body.
Martynov pushing out the jab but it's not landing. Martynov takes a shot right to the bread basket. Costa has been working on his boxing with his coaches at LA Vale Tudo in the buildup to the fight. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Costa displays some good footwork, moving neatly out of range as Martynov throws out the jab. and Martynov cracks him with a counter punch right on the button. Martynov takes a solid shot to the body. That one hurt him but he's trying not to show it. Martynov uses decent footwork to sidestep a right hand from Costa.

A left lands for Costa. Costa throws a big shot that misses. Martynov doesn't fully commit to the body shot counter. Sergei Martynov is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs. Nice defenses there by Martynov. Martynov throws a shot from downtown. Costa moves away and avoids it. Costa tries to counter with a takedown but Martynov is quick to defend against it. and Costa counters with a takedown into side control. Martynov is trying to control Costa's posture but Costa avoids it. That's two minutes gone in the round. The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here. Martynov prevents Costa from getting a body triangle. Martynov trying to control but not successfully. Costa keeps control of the position as Martynov tries to break free.
Costa gets his hands free as Martynov looks to control. Costa is controlling the position but Martynov somehow manages to roll and ends up with half guard.
Martynov controlling the leg, holding on to half guard. Martynov felt the need to train up his defensive grappling in the buildup to the fight. Presumably he was expecting to be in a difficult position like this, so let's see if he can get out of it.

Martynov is staying active underneath Costa, who seems content to just control the action from this position. Costa is just sitting in half guard, waiting for something to happen. Martynov is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Costa's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Costa's back!
That's four minutes gone in the round. Costa staying busy and making it hard for Martynov to control. Martynov is looking cool and calm here, just waiting for a good opportunity to attack and finish the fight from this dominant position.
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake. Costa rolls, trying to escape but Martynov keeps control of the position.

Santiago Costa dominated that round. The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!
Martynov tries to clinch up but Costa circles away and keeps his distance. A quick step to the side and Costa tries to counter with a shot to the body but it doesn't connect. Costa misses with a body shot.
Costa fakes a head punch and goes low to the body. Nicely done. Martynov lands a jab followed by a nice looking cross.
The fighters circle momentarily. Costa darts into range and connects with a nice straight punch. Martynov instigates a clinch. Martynov blocks a body shot from Costa. A head punch blocked on the inside by Martynov. Martynov lands a left hand that snaps the head of Costa backwards. Costa on the defensive, avoiding the knees to the body.
Martynov lands with a light punch inside. Martynov gets through Costa's defenses to land a nice punch to the side of the head. This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Costa is trying to pull guard but being pressed up against the ropes enables Martynov to keep the fight standing. Costa takes an elbow to the forehead. Costa throws a punch but it's blocked by Martynov. Martynov can't find room to land a body shot as Costa controls the action.
Costa has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Martynov uses from the top position. Costa working for submissions but it's allowed Martynov to get to half guard.
That's one minute gone in the round. Martynov seems to have lost interest with the ground game and is thinking about standing back up.
Costa regains full guard. Nicely done. Martynov engaging in some classic timewasting tactics. The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring. Costa working for a triangle but Martynov defends it easily.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it. Martynov passes Costa's left leg - he's now in half guard. Martynov decides to stand and escape the position. Costa just misses with a punch to the body.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Nice uppercut there from Martynov. Martynov stuffs the takedown. A looping hook to the body misses from Costa. Martynov does a little dance to reset his feet. Costa throws a body shot but no joy. Martynov misses with a straight right. A counter left hand to the body from Costa misses its target. Martynov misses with a looping left. Martynov lands a lovely overhand right. Martynov misses with a wild body shot. Martynov keeps his opponent at a distance with a nice jab.
Costa throws a hook but Martynov avoids it easily. Martynov misses with a few strikes there.
An attempted straight right counter from Costa misses the target. Costa is looking to wear down Martynov with body shots, infact he's throwing more body shots than head shots at the moment. Costa displays some good footwork, moving neatly out of range as Martynov throws out the jab.

A left lands for Costa. Martynov tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Costa was well out of range. Poor timing from Martynov. We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out! Nice cross by Martynov. Martynov steps to the side to avoid the strikes from Costa. Costa shoots in and gets a takedown into Martynov's guard. Martynov had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Costa defends it easily. Costa works a leg free and moves into half guard. Costa is looking for a kimura here.
Martynov is looking to control Costa's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Martynov avoid being mounted? And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Sergei Martynov showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards. The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.

Costa throws a body punch but Martynov moves out of range. Martynov takes a body punch that cleary hurt but he's trying not to show any weakness. Martynov works over Costa's head and body with a nice combination. Costa misses with a takedown attempt and Martynov counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw. Costa misses with a shot to the body and Martynov counters nicely by changing levels and landing a hook to the body. Costa shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Costa showed some decent athleticism there. The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here. Martynov tries to roll over but Costa keeps him under control. Martynov actively working from the bottom here.

Martynov might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Costa haven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time. Martynov looking for submissions off his back.
That's two minutes gone in the round. There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action. Martynov slips a foot under and gets full guard. Nice work. Martynov looking for a triangle here. Costa is fighting it but it looks tight! Martynov pulls the arm across and this one won't last much longer! Nope, Costa is tapping out - this one is all over!
