PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Edgar Hanson (ranked 24713 p4p, 0 weight class) and Matthew Roy (ranked 5668 p4p, 0 weight class). The key to victory for Edgar Hanson has got to be keeping the fight on the feet.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 3 - 0, fighting out of New York, Edgar Hanson!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of New York, Matthew Roy!
The judges for this bout are Jonathan Paton, Anthony Taglia and John Roberts.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Roy moves into the clinch.
Roy manages to get underhooks and slows down the pace for a moment.
Roy lands a hook that snaps the head of Hanson backwards.
A short uppercut from Roy.
Hanson is trying to push Roy away but Roy has him pressed against the cage, so he's going nowhere.

Roy jumps guard.
Roy has a closed guard, preventing anything of note from happening. Perhaps he's looking to stall.
Hanson throws a big right hand that misses.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Hanson trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.

Roy has an active guard here but Hanson has managed to pass into half guard.

Hanson wants to work for an arm triangle but Roy is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.

Hanson is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Roy defends it well.
Roy preventing any damage for now, controlling his opponent's head.
Roy makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Roy.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Roy controlling the position.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Roy utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
Roy looking to control the pace of the fight rather than finish it.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
Roy avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
Edgar Hanson seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Roy closes the distance and pushes Hanson back into the cage.

Hanson is fighting off a takedown attempt but Roy is just too persistent for him and manages to trip Hanson to the mat. Hanson regains guard as soon as the fighters hit the mat.

The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Roy loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.
Roy wants to stand but Hanson is controlling his posture from full guard.
Hanson is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Roy is controlling him.
Roy wants to get up but he can't break Hanson's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup.
Roy is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.
Hanson wants to clinch up but Roy keeps it at a distance.
Hanson tries to grapple but his opponent circles

and Roy counters with a shoot takedown into half guard.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!


Hanson darts in trying to clinch

and Roy counters with a nice double leg into half guard.
Roy wants to stand but Hanson has hold of a leg and an arm, so he's trapped for now.
Roy controlling the pace.
Let's hope that Roy has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Hanson is trying to maintain the position but Roy is very close to passing his half guard.

Roy stops Hanson from getting back to his feet.
Hanson throws a strike from the bottom that misses.
Matthew Roy has got the better of the ground game so far.

Roy stands up from half guard.
Hanson tries to score a power double leg takedown but Roy sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Hanson somewhat.
Hanson shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Roy sprawls well. Roy wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Hanson gets slowly back to his feet.
Hanson is looking to clinch but Roy is avoiding it.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.

Roy clinches.

Roy's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.

Roy shoots in and bounces Hanson off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.
Hanson wants to get back to his feet but he's too absorbed in his own little project and Roy manages to pass to side control.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Roy controlling the action here.
Roy is keeping good posture, landing some ground and pound.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Roy looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding.
Hanson is looking to escape.
Hanson on the receiving end of some nice ground and pound.
Roy scoring with strikes to the body and head.

Roy escapes and gets back to his feet.

Hanson gets a clinch.
Roy digs a right hand into Hanson's ribs. Those have got to be taking their toll on Hanson's gas tank.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Roy misses with a short punch on the inside.
Hanson blocks a knee to the body. He'll have a nicely bruised forearm in the morning.

Roy works for the underhooks and manages to get a trip takedown into guard.
Roy advances position into side control!
Roy content to control the pace. The referee will try and keep them active though.
Roy's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Roy slips into full mount, dodging the strikes by Hanson.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Matthew Roy showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business. This is the final round!


Hanson is looking to clinch.
Roy is loading up here, looking for a big counter of his own.

Roy pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Matthew Roy is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Hanson goes for a double leg but Roy avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Roy continues to drive forward.

Roy throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Hanson was covering up waiting for the punch and Roy finishes the takedown easily into guard.

Roy content to control rather than advance.
Roy takes advantage of the dominant position to land a couple of big hammer fists.
Roy wants to pass to mount but Hanson is defending the position.
It looks like Roy is going to stand back up.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Hanson has hold of Roy's hands but Roy slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow.
Roy winds up and cracks Hanson with a swinging punch to the side of the head.
Hanson looks like he's trying to stand up.
Hanson is trying to maintain the position but Roy is very close to passing his half guard.
Roy content to sit in half guard and control for a moment.

Roy wants to work for an arm triangle but Hanson is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.

Still in half guard, Roy seems content to control.
More stalling from Roy.
Hanson throws a strike from the bottom but Roy passes into side control!
Hanson is looking to get back to his feet here but Roy is keeping cool and he's managed to take Hanson's back.
Matthew Roy is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.

Hanson is being controlled on the ground here - he must escape this position otherwise surely the end is near.

Hanson just trying to survive but Roy is wriggling into a better position, looking to finish.

Matthew Roy comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Roy has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
