Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Bernie Strong! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Montoya Malasantos! The judges for this bout are Trevor Gratis, Dillan Fox and Steve Smith.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Strong shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Malasantos as he jumps to the side. Malasantos misses with a wild combination.
Malasantos tries for a takedown but Strong circles away easily and Strong counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Strong. Malasantos is looking for a takedown up against the cage. Strong gets underhooks though and prevents the takedown attempt. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Malasantos is trying to work for a single leg takedown but Strong pulls him back up using the underhooks. Bernie Strong has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Montoya Malasantos. Malasantos content to slow the pace in the clinch.
Strong fails to pull the fight into his guard.
Strong jumps into guard, dragging Malasantos to the mat.
That's one minute gone in the round. Malasantos slips nicely into half guard. Malasantos not doing much here.
Malasantos is looking to pass the guard... He's managed it - he's now in full mount! Malasantos seems to be looking to move to his opponent's back but Strong is holding on tight.
Strong really trying hard to get back to half guard here.
Malasantos controlling his opponent. Strong might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Malasantos trying to control but Strong is having none of it. Malasantos looking to finish with strikes here!
Strong is looking to get to half guard. Strong is trying to reverse the position but instead Malasantos has taken his back - oops! Malasantos working for a choke but Strong is defending well.
That's three minutes gone in the round. So, who will make the next big move? In this position it could be crucial.
Strong prevents Malasantos from getting a body triangle. Strong is displaying good submission defense - not really looking in danger of submitting to the rear naked choke at the moment. That could change in an instant of course if Malasantos gets his way!
Malasantos wants to control but Strong is keeping busy.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Malasantos is working for the choke. I would put my money on him to finish from this position. He's rolled onto his back and has dragged Strong with him. Strong is trying to defend but Malasantos has an arm under the chin now! Strong grimaces and is forced to tap out!
