PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Henry Armstrong (ranked 3804 p4p, 386 weight class) and Lamont King (ranked 1834 p4p, 216 weight class). Armstrong comes to the ring accompanied by 999 - Homicide. King is bobbing his head along to his entrance song: King For A Day - Green Day . Henry Armstrong could well score a knockout today. He has the power to get to Lamont King's chin.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 7 - 11 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Henry Armstrong!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Lamont King!
The judges for this bout are Frank Dennis, Cecil Peabody and Robert Twigg.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Armstrong shoots in looking for a takedown. King tries to sprawl out of it but Armstrong keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the ropes. King manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
King has been spending a lot of time sparring his boxing in the run up to the fight, trying to sharpen up those hands and look for a knockout.
Armstrong fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
Armstrong looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? King is fending him off so far but Armstrong persists. Nope, King circles away and we're back to standing.

King gets caught napping as Armstrong dives in and scores a takedown. King manages to retain guard.

Armstrong throws a strike but King rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.

King won't allow Armstrong to get back to his feet.
King stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Armstrong swivels though and keeps the full guard.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring.
King tries to free his leg and advance position but Armstrong is retaining full guard.
Armstrong wants to stand but King is controlling the position.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
Armstrong tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but King swivels and escapes.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Henry Armstrong. That's going to take a lot out of him.

King keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
King scores with a sloppy right hand. Armstrong should have avoided that one.
King misses with an uppercut.
Armstrong shoots in for a takedown but King shows good takedown defense.
Armstrong shoots in for a double leg but King sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.

King lands a beauty of a right hand that gets the crowd cheering.

Armstrong drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.
Armstrong throwing strikes but King manages to buck up and roll into a nice reversal - now he's on top in side control!
This has been an exciting period of action!
King tries to advance to mount but Armstrong denies him.
Armstrong wants to get back to his feet.
Armstrong prevents King from moving into mount.
Both fighters have adopted an aggressive gameplan on the ground!
Armstrong is trying to buck King off.
Armstrong is in a tricky position. We've heard reports from his gym mates at CrossFit Sydney that he's been drilling escapes, so let's see if he can get back to his feet.
A lull in the action here as King stalls from top position.
Armstrong gives up the full mount - oops, sloppy defensive grappling there!

King with some aggressive grappling here. He's looking for submissions here, rather than waiting for the opportunity to counter.
Armstrong might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.

Armstrong wants to try and get back to his feet.
Armstrong is squirming around, avoiding King's attempts to control the action.

King looking for an armbar but decides to keep the dominant position instead.

King trying to control but Armstrong is having none of it.
Armstrong is trying to get to the ropes to help him get back to his feet.
The fighters are tangled up in the ropes here. We might need a restart if the fighters can't break free themselves.
King fakes a shot to the body and cracks his opponent in the head. Nice ground and pound there!
Armstrong tries to buck King off but he can't manage it.
Armstrong trying desperately to get back to his feet here but he's not having any joy at all. He's going to tire himself out if he's not careful.
King sitting in mount, just looking to control for the moment.

You get the feeling that Armstrong really doesn't like being in this position too much.
King wants to control the pace but Armstrong is squirming around nicely.
King wants to take Armstrong's back but he can't do it this time.
King keeps trying to improve his position.
King is still trying to improve position.
King tries to control but Armstrong wriggling away.
King is trying to stand up but he's being controlled by his opponent.

King fails to advance to Armstrong's back.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Lamont King dominated that round.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.


Armstrong fails with the takedown
and King counters with a right hand to the body.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Armstrong.
King stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and King wants it to stay on the feet.

King throws a looping overhand right but Armstrong ducks down to avoid it.
King defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Armstrong.
Armstrong misses with a combination
and King counters with a nice uppercut.
Armstrong keeping his hands up high there, blocking the jab from King.
A slow jab from King misses its intended target.
Armstrong misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
Armstrong fakes high and swings low for a body shot but King manages to avoid it.
It seemed like King was going to counter with the hook but didn't fully commit to it.
Henry Armstrong seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Armstrong walks into a straight right hand from King.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Armstrong throws a jab, cross combination which is slipped
and King cracks him with a counter punch right on the button.
Lamont King seems to be getting the better of the standup.
King darts in and out, connecting with a jab.


It looks like Henry Armstrong has been cut.
Henry Armstrong is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.

Armstrong scores with a nice takedown into half guard. Let's see what he's got on the ground.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Armstrong thows a huge punch but King dodges it nicely.

King is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Armstrong defends well.

King has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Armstrong can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

King is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
Armstrong wants to pass the guard but King is keeping the position.

Armstrong is trying to tuck his arms in to keep them safe but King has managed to isolate one of them and has got a loose triangle. Armstrong is looking to defend but King has done well to lock his legs together - this could be big trouble for Armstrong! King pulls down on the head and a little smile comes across his face - he knows he's got it. Yep, Armstrong taps out and this one is all over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:41 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Triangle). Lamont King!
