Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Stephen Harper! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Fidel Castro! The judges for this bout are Mauricio Rocha, Luis Engracia and Thiago Cunha.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Castro uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Harper.
Castro gets cracked there but stands up to it.
Stephen Harper seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Nice sprawl there from Castro as Harper shoots in. A nice leg kick lands there from Castro. Harper rushes Castro and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch. Harper successfully pulls guard.
Harper controls Castro momentarily but Castro frees himself. Castro is looking to stand up but Harper won't let him. Castro wants to pass the guard but Harper is keeping the position. Harper tries to land a sweep but no joy. Harper keeping moving, preventing Castro from controlling successfully. Castro is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions. Castro throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent.
That's one minute gone in the round. Harper seems keen to control rather than go for a submission, at least for now.
The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up. A nice leg kick lands there from Castro. Harper shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Oh and he's advanced to full mount straight away. Castro manages to work a leg through to get back to half guard here. Good work there by Castro, under a barage of strikes from Harper.
Harper frees up his trapped foot and advances to mount. Harper looking to control and managing it successfully. Castro keeping his composure momentarily, calmly looking to get back to half guard.
Harper tries to control but Castro wriggling away.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Castro is trying desperately to improve position. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Harper controlling from the full mount. Harper landing shots from mount. Castro wants to control but Harper is having none of it. A nice elbow there by Harper. Harper looking to control and managing it successfully.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Castro wants to control but Harper is having none of it. Castro is looking to get to half guard. The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult. Castro tries to hold on but Harper postures up. Harper looking to control and managing it successfully. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Castro is in all sorts of trouble here.
Harper knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Castro on the ground. Castro looks gassed! Harper scoring with strikes but Castro is staying in there.
Castro is rocked!
That's four minutes gone in the round. The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight. Castro is looking to get to half guard. Castro is still in real trouble! Can Harper finish him? Harper postures up and cracks his opponent a couple of times before moving back into close ground control. Castro looks a forlorn figure.
Harper swings around for an armbar and he's got it! Wow, that came out of nowhere! What a finish!
