The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Popper swats away the attempt to clinch by Turturro. Popper tries to keep at a distance but Turturro has taken the fight into the clinch. Popper escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Turturro tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Popper paws at him with a jab and circles away. Turturro tries to clinch up. Popper misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.

Popper has been spending a lot of time sparring his boxing in the run up to the fight, trying to sharpen up those hands and look for a knockout. Popper circles away from the clinch attempt.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Popper thuds his shin into the meat of Turturro's side. Turturro tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion. A nice combination there by Popper.

I was talking to Turturro's coach per-fight and he was telling me that they'd been working on the clinch in the runup to this fight.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Popper trying to control the position from guard on top but Turturro is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Popper got a little sloppy there for a moment and Turturro has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Popper has managed to get both his arms back between Turturro's legs - danger averted. Turturro looking for submissions from the bottom here.
