PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Grant Merrill (ranked 6786 p4p, 0 weight class) and David Assis (ranked 4662 p4p, 403 weight class). Assis has chosen Thirty Six as his entrance music. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Grant Merrill!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, David Assis!
The judges for this bout are Yukihiro Shimada, Shirou Masuda and Taro Takaoka.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Merrill leaves Assis with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Merrill fires out a quick counter leg kick but Assis just manages to avoid it.
Assis stuffs the takedown attempt from Merrill. Merrill gets slowly back to his feet.
Assis will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
Merrill shoots for a double leg takedown but Assis sprawls well. He's pushed Merrill's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
Assis is looking for the big counter here.
Assis tries to clinch but Merrill moves out of range.
Merrill circles away from the clinch attempt.
Assis will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
Grant Merrill has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of David Assis.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Assis tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Merrill swivels and escapes.
Assis wants to clinch up but Merrill keeps it at a distance.
It looked like Merrill was looking amped, ready to throw a big counter but didn't commit.

Assis has managed to clinch.
Assis fails to pull the fight into his guard.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Assis displaying some good clinch control by pressing Merrill up against the cage.
Assis jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Merrill walks away with a smile on his face. Assis gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.
Assis misses with a takedown attempt
and Merrill counters with a nice body kick.
Assis shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Merrill as he avoids it easily.
Assis tries to close the distance and clinch but Merrill swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
Merrill is looking to clinch.
Merrill shoots in and drives through. Assis sprawls well.
Merrill avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
Merrill stuffs the takedown attempt from Assis. Assis gets slowly back to his feet.
Assis looks winded!

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Merrill misses with an attempted mid kick.
Assis shapes to counter with a head kick.

Assis gets to the clinch - let's see what his plan is here.
Assis is trying to pull guard but Merrill has him pressed against the cage.

Assis jumps into guard, dragging Merrill to the mat.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Merrill accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

Merrill avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
Merrill scores with a decent looking elbow strike.

Merrill drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Merrill jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Merrill in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.
Assis is trying to control the position from the bottom.
The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.
Merrill is looking to stand up but Assis won't let him.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.

Merrill darts in and clinches Assis up against the cage.
Assis looking for a takedown.
Merrill blocks a couple of punches on the inside.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Assis tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.

Merrill breaks from the clinch.
Assis displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Merrill.

Assis has managed to clinch.
Merrill wants to break free. God knows he wants to breaaaak freeee.
Merrill letting Assis take a breather here.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Assis tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.
Assis has had enough of the clinch and is looking to separate.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Grant Merrill dominated that round.
That's time! Merrill's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.


Merrill fakes a jab and scores with a low kick.
Assis tries to close the distance and clinch but Merrill swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
Assis is looking to clinch but Merrill is avoiding it.
As Assis backs away, Merrill returns fire with a leg kick that just misses.

Assis drops Merrill with a beautiful combination! Merrill stares up at his opponent, who ushers him back to his feet - Assis is looking for the KO!


It looks like Grant Merrill has been cut.
Assis throws a left and a right that both miss
and Merrill counters with a slapping leg kick.

Merrill drives through with a takedown into guard.

Assis has butterfly guard. He's looking to stand up here. He pushes Merrill off him and springs to his feet nicely. The crowd applauds.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Horrible takedown attempt by Merrill or perhaps it was just good defense by Assis, which made it look bad.

Merrill scores with a takedown into Assis's guard.

Assis scrambles and gets back to his feet.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Merrill throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Assis's waist but Assis gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Merrill off to one side.
David Assis is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Assis misses with a takedown attempt
and Merrill counters with a low kick, right behind Assis 's knee.
Assis is breathing heavily.
Assis gets in close and tags Merrill with a short punch that almost sends Merrill to the mat! Oh Merrill is in big trouble! He turns his back on Assis, trying to create some distance but Assis rushes him, striking wildly and Merrill goes down! The referee tackles Assis into the cage to end the fight! Assis is one violent man!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:32 of round 2, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). David Assis!
An out of breath David Assis thanked his loyal fans in his post fight interview, giving them credit for his success over the course of his career.
