PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a super heavyweight MMA rules bout between Shaka Zulu (ranked 3107 p4p, 109 weight class) and Nikolas Vieira (ranked 3627 p4p, 123 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the super heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Shaka Zulu!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Nikolas Vieira!
The judges for this bout are Don Winkell, Timothy Bukovac and Frank Antenori.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Vieira will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
Vieira shoots in for a double leg but Zulu sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.
Vieira shoots in for a takedown but Zulu shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.
Shaka Zulu has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Nikolas Vieira.
Vieira looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
Zulu went nuts there looking for a big combo counter but none of the flurry connected.

Zulu tries to sprawl but Vieira drives through with a takedown into half guard.
Zulu is looking for a sweep. Vieira is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Vieira really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Zulu. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Zulu looking for subs from the bottom but Vieira mounts him!
Zulu slips a leg in and gets back to half guard.
Zulu moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.
Zulu is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Vieira avoids a guillotine attempt easily.

Zulu escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Vieira gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Zulu looking to hit a scissor sweep but Vieira is one step ahead there.
Zulu is trying to keep Vieira in close.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

Zulu working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Vieira doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Vieira manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Zulu seems to have improved his submission grappling technique since last time we saw him. Let's see if he can pull off a submission.
Vieira in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.
Vieira stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Zulu swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Zulu is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Vieira wants to get back to his feet.
Zulu winds up and cracks Vieira with a swinging punch to the side of the head.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Zulu moves into full mount! Vieira won't be happy about that!
Vieira is bucking up trying to escape but Zulu cracks him with another couple of good strikes.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Shaka Zulu dominated that round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.


Zulu leaves Vieira with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.

Shaka Zulu has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Nikolas Vieira.

Zulu forces Vieira back against the cage and clinches.

Zulu gets control of Vieira's arms and successfully pulls guard. Zulu will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back.
Zulu is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Vieira can do to turn this around?

Zulu wants to hit a switch here but Vieira passes into full mount! Oh no, disaster for Zulu there!
Shaka Zulu overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Vieira punching from mount but Zulu doing a good job of avoiding damage.

Zulu regains half guard.
Zulu works his way to full guard. Good work.
Zulu bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Vieira's guard.

Vieira wants to stand but Zulu is controlling the position.
Zulu scoring with punches to the head and body.
Vieira can't keep his opponent in guard - Zulu advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount.
Zulu seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime.
Vieira is staying active underneath Zulu, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Zulu landing with strikes to the body and head, softening up his opponent.
Zulu working over Vieira with some ground and pound. Vieira looks like he wants out of this position, which is understandable.

Zulu seems to be looking for submissions.
Zulu trying to control from half guard but Vieira is working away.

Vieira wants to get back to his feet.
Vieira is refusing to be controlled, as Zulu sits in half guard.
Vieira is trying to stand up here but Zulu is controlling him well.
Zulu has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Vieira is using up a lot of energy trying to get back to his feet. Perhaps he should improve his position first.
Vieira is trying to defend against the ground and pound but Zulu scores with a couple of nice shots.
Zulu prevents Vieira from standing back up.

Zulu is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.
Zulu with a momentary lay and pray from half guard.

The crowd are loving this. Great action here.

Vieira is pushing off trying to get to his feet. Zulu has hold of the leg though and he's dropped back for a heel hook… has he got it?? YES! Vieira is tapping! This fight is all over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:59 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Heel Hook). Shaka Zulu!
Shaka Zulu was full of energy after the big win and talked about how he thinks he can do big things in this sport. The crowd were appreciative of his determination to succeed.
