PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Carter Joyce (ranked 23914 p4p, 0 weight class) and Pedro Cane (ranked 4612 p4p, 0 weight class). Cane is bobbing his head along to his entrance song: Rebirth by Franco. Carter Joyce has a significant reach advantage - let's see if he can make it count.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.

The judges for this bout are Ren Mimura, Taro Takaoka and Yukihiro Shimada.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Joyce changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Cane looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.
Cane tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Joyce wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
Cane is trying to control Joyce's posture but Joyce avoids it.
Joyce will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
Cane parries the strikes from Joyce easily there. Joyce is wary of posturing up too much because it might enable Cane to escape.
Cane is looking to reverse the position.
Who's going to make the next move?
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Cane manages to get back to half guard.
Cane is doing well to control the position and prevent Joyce from advancing to side control.
Joyce tries to stand and escape but Cane is controlling the position.

Joyce got a little sloppy there for a moment and Cane has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Joyce has managed to get both his arms back between Cane's legs - danger averted.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Joyce with a lazy takedown attempt

Cane is pulling down on Joyce's head. It's preventing any offense from Joyce, at least for the moment.
Let's hope that Cane has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.

Cane escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Joyce gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

Joyce knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Cane on the ground.
A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Cane holds on and takes a little breather.

Pedro Cane showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

Cane feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
Cane seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.
Joyce is trying to keep Cane in close.
Joyce is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Joyce bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Cane's guard.

Cane has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

Cane's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.

Joyce wants to stand up, so he's looking to wriggle free of Cane's closed guard. He's half up but Cane has locked on to an arm! Uh oh! Cane pivots and extends the arm, Joyce falls face first to the mat and taps??... does he?? YES! He's tapping! Excellent counter grappling there by Cane! Well done that man!
