Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
3 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Grant Merrill! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Akumi Yokoi! The judges for this bout are Yuuki Gou, Ren Mimura and Shirou Masuda.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! We've got one fighter who appears to only be looking to counter and the other not looking particularly aggressive either, so we could be in for a dull fight. Merrill fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Yokoi avoids it really well and circles away. Merrill tries to score a power double leg takedown but Yokoi sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Merrill somewhat. Yokoi is looking for the big counter here.
That's one minute gone in the round. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. A telegraphed takedown attempt from Merrill is defended easily by Yokoi. Yokoi is trying to avoid his opponent's strikes and get into the clinch. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Grant Merrill. That's going to take a lot out of him. Nice takedown defense from Yokoi. No joy for Merrill on that attempt. As Merrill backs off Yokoi throws a huge counter combo but Merrill manages to avoid it all. Merrill moves into the clinch successfully.
Yokoi wants to take the fight to the mat but Merrill manages to get underhooks and keep the fight in the clinch. Yokoi can't get the takedown.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Yokoi has Merrill pressed up against the cage and is working for takedown. Merrill manages to improve position though and keeps the fight standing. Merrill breaks the clinch.
Merrill looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily. Merrill shoots in and gets a takedown into Yokoi's guard. Yokoi working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Merrill doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Merrill manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Yokoi working for a triangle but Merrill defends it easily.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Yokoi is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Merrill defends well. Yokoi throws his legs up looking for a submission but Merrill uses it to pass to side control.
Yokoi sneaks back into half guard.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Yokoi looking for submissions from an awkward position here. Merrill looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
Yokoi is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Merrill pulls his head out easily. Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out! Yokoi looking for submissions from an awkward position here. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Akumi Yokoi dominated that round. That's time! Back to the action!
Merrill shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Yokoi as he avoids it easily. Yokoi is loading up here, looking for a big counter of his own. Merrill clinches up against the cage. We're hearing some news coming in from back stage. It's official - Yokoi has eaten all the pies! Merrill leaning his opponent against the cage. Merrill blocks a couple of punches on the inside.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Yokoi looking to stall.
Yokoi is trying to pull guard but Merrill turns him against the cage and we stay in the clinch.
That's one minute gone in the round. Merrill escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Merrill fails with a takedown attempt. Yokoi is loading up here, looking for a big counter of his own. Merrill fakes a head shot and lands one to the body. A momentary lapse in concentration from Yokoi enables Merrill to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Yokoi manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Yokoi is working for submissions here. He's thrown up his legs looking for a triangle but Merrill frees his head nicely. Oh but Yokoi has switched to an armbar! Merrill is tapping furiously! Lovely submission there!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:22 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Triangle Armbar). Akumi Yokoi! Akumi Yokoi opened up his post fight interview with a scream to camera that he wants a title shot! Whether he deserves the shot will be up to the management of the organization, so I guess he'll have to wait and see.
