Coming up we have a heavyweight Tycoon World Grappling Championship rules bout between Caidan Cartwright (ranked 19330 p4p, 0 weight class) and Kang Urip (ranked 2231 p4p, 257 weight class). Kang Urip told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!
This TWGC bout is 1 fifteen minute round in the heavyweight division. Introducing today's competitors. In the red corner, competing out of Hilo, with a TWGC record of 2 wins and 2 losses; Caidan Cartwright! And in the blue corner, fighting out of Los Angeles, with a TWGC record of 2 wins and 0 losses; Kang Urip! The judges for this bout are Paul Tew, Steven Brown and Sam Margolis.
The fighters connect hands in the middle of the mat and we are under way. Urip is looking to clinch. Cartwright tries to counter by clinching up but Urip breaks away and moves out of range. Urip tries to close the distance and clinch but Cartwright swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away. Urip clinches up with Cartwright and pushes him back against the cage. Urip tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Cartwright smiles and moves away.
Cartwright darts in and clinches Urip up against the cage. Urip pulls guard effortlessly. A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Urip holds on and takes a little breather. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Cartwright tries to free his leg and advance position but Urip is retaining full guard. Urip really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Cartwright. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Urip keeping moving, preventing Cartwright from controlling successfully. Cartwright slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard. Urip has Cartwright pulled in close to control his posture.
That's one minute gone in the round. Urip wants to sweep but no luck. Cartwright advances position into side control! Score +3 for passing guard: Cartwright (3) vs (0) Urip Cartwright trying to control the position but Urip is working away. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Cartwright is really struggling to control Urip but he's trying to hold on to the position. Urip is looking for a sweep. Cartwright wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Urip, who protects the arm well. Urip told us pre-fight that he has been working on his escapes in training. Let's see if he can call on some of his new skills to get back to his feet. Cartwright wants to lay and pray for a moment but Urip keeps working. Cartwright working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it. Cartwright is maintaining the dominant position - no doubt Urip will start to get frustrated soon if he's not already. Cartwright thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Urip is looking for a sweep. Cartwright wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Urip, who protects the arm well. Cartwright tries to move into full mount but can't pass Urip's legs. Urip is looking for a sweep. Cartwright working away. Urip is looking for a sweep. Cartwright looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything. Cartwright has knee on belly and moves into mount.
