Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 5 - 0, fighting out of New York, Norman Young!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Fernando Mendes!
The judges for this bout are Joseph Jones, John Roberts and Alyssa Summers.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Mendes misses with a wild combination.
Nice uppercut lands for Young. That snapped Mendes's head back.
Young misses with a takedown

and Mendes moves into the clinch.

Mendes breaks from the clinch.
Young keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.

Mendes moves into the clinch.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Young breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.

Young gets caught flat footed, as Mendes shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.

Young is edging up against the cage. He's using the cage to get back to his feet. Nice work there - the fighters are clinched.

Young tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.
Young wants to break free. God knows he wants to breaaaak freeee.
Mendes tries to score a body lock takedown but Young shows good agility there to stay on his feet.
Young lands a body punch.
Mendes tried to land a shot to the body but connects with Young's elbow.

Mendes manages to break the clinch.
Mendes wants to clinch up but Young keeps it at a distance.
The fight stays on the outside here - Young looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
Young tries to score a power double leg takedown but Mendes sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Young somewhat.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Norman Young. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Mendes dives in and scores a takedown into Young's guard.
Mendes works a leg free and moves into half guard.
Mendes wants to get back to his feet.
Young is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Mendes passes the half guard and he's now in mount! Big trouble for Young!

Mendes trying to control but he's not successful this time.
Mendes controlling from mount.
Poor strikes thrown by Mendes there. More accuracy and less frantic strikes would help!

Young holding onto his opponent's waist for dear life, as Mendes tries to land some strikes to get him to release his grip.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Young tries to lock up and control but Mendes gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.
Young tries to control the position but Mendes now has his back.
Mendes biding his time, looking for the opening.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Young forces Mendes back against the cage and clinches.
Mendes tries to throw a body punch but Young avoids it by throwing Mendes back against the cage.

Mendes breaks the clinch.
Mendes has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Young throws a leg kick that misses.
Young blocks a leg kick.
Young shoots in for a double leg but Mendes sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.

Young fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Mendes, pushing him back against the cage.

Mendes pulls Young into guard.

Mendes looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Young working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.
Mendes lands a beautiful sweep and he's now moved into his opponent's guard.

Mendes controls from within his opponent's guard.
Young knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Mendes on the ground.
Mendes is continuing to stall.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Mendes forces his way into half guard.
Mendes wants to take a breather but Young is having none of it.

Young actively working from the bottom here.
Mendes not landing any meaningful shots this time.

Mendes is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Young defends it well.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Mendes seems to be working for a kimura but Young defends the submission attempt.

Mendes tries to stand but can't do so whilst Young controls his leg.
Mendes slows the pace down in half guard.

Mendes in half guard on the top. He's looking for a kimura... He's got it locked and he's managed to free his trapped foot. Young tries to escape but it's on too tight and he has to tap! Great BJJ skills there from Mendes!
