PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Francis Underwood (ranked 5555 p4p, 519 weight class) and Derek Erwin (ranked 3160 p4p, 373 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Francis Underwood!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Derek Erwin!
The judges for this bout are Konstantin Menshow, Ivan Kurochkin and Fedor Mirinova.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
We've got one fighter who appears to only be looking to counter and the other not looking particularly aggressive either, so we could be in for a dull fight.
Erwin shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Underwood throws a head kick but Erwin moves out of range.
A right-left combo lands from Underwood.
A jab from Erwin does it's job there.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Erwin shoots in for a takedown but Underwood shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.

And Erwin tries to counter it with a takedown but Underwood pushes his down on his head and steps out.

Erwin feints and as Underwood raises his hands in defense, Erwin changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.

Erwin is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Underwood is just riding it out for now. Erwin eventually gives up the hold.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Erwin is taking a breather. Underwood says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.

That was a close round but I would say that Francis Underwood will probably get the nod.
That's time! Underwood's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.

A bit of a lull in the action. I'm sure it will pick up again soon... even if the ref has to physically pick them up and put them back on their feet.

Underwood seems a little lost for a moment, as Erwin dominates the positioning.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Underwood wants to control but Erwin postures up.

Erwin thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.

Erwin wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Underwood, who protects the arm well.
Underwood knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Erwin on the ground.

Underwood tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Erwin wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.

Erwin is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Underwood knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.

Derek Erwin showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business. This is the final round!

Erwin is looking to take a break and control but Underwood is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Erwin might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Underwood haven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.

Erwin is going oldschool here, as he tries to force Underwood to tap using a forearm choke. This isn't 1993 though, so Underwood shrugs it off.

Erwin tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.

Underwood tries to lock up and control but Erwin gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

Erwin remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while.
