PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between James Smith (ranked 1741 p4p, 211 weight class) and Demetrious Waters (ranked 2401 p4p, 275 weight class). I'm sure you'll be fascinated to know that I was talking to some pointless Z list celebrity before the fight and he thought that Demetrious Waters was going to win. Let's see if he was right.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 13 - 7 - 0, fighting out of New York, James Smith!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 8 - 8 - 0, fighting out of New York, Demetrious Waters!
The judges for this bout are Topper Green, Hugh Johnson and John Mangel.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Waters misses with a takedown attempt
enabling Smith to counter with a crisp jab.
Waters shoots in but doesn't get the takedown
letting Smith counter with a right hand.
Waters will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
James Smith has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Demetrious Waters.
Waters shoots in for a takedown but Smith shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.
Waters gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily

and Smith counters with a takedown into side control.
Waters seems a little lost for a moment, as Smith dominates the positioning.
Smith works a knee to the body and follows up with a nice elbow to the head.
Smith controlling from side mount.
Smith landing with strikes to the head and body from side control.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Smith scores with a couple of short elbows.
The referee tells the fighters to keep busy.
Smith grinds an elbow into Waters's temple.
Waters is positioning himself to get back to half guard.
Smith happy to just control the position for now.

Smith is putting a hurting on Waters here, landing some big shots from side control.

Smith just content to control the position.
Waters stops Smith from passing to mount.
Smith working the ground and pound.
Waters gets one leg under and gets the fight to half guard.
Nice strikes from Smith there.
Waters tries to roll over but Smith keeps him under control.
Smith is controlling the pace.
Waters taking some punishment here, with Smith in his half guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Waters is trying to defend against the ground and pound but Smith scores with a couple of nice shots.
Smith drops an elbow to the side of Waters's head.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Smith working Waters over with strikes.
Smith seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.

Waters looking for subs from the bottom but Smith mounts him!
Smith controlling from the full mount.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Waters gets back to half guard.

Waters looking for submissions off his back.
Smith looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding.
The referee walks around the fighters to get a better view of the action. Smith lands a nice short elbow.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Smith winds up and cracks Waters with a swinging punch to the side of the head.
Waters felt the need to train up his defensive grappling in the buildup to the fight. Presumably he was expecting to be in a difficult position like this, so let's see if he can get out of it.
Smith wants to pass to mount but Waters is defending the position.
Smith is keeping good posture, landing some ground and pound.
Smith lands strikes from half guard.

Waters looking to work for a kimura from the bottom.
Smith seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Waters has guillotine here! It looks pretty tight! Could this be all over! No, Smith escapes and passes into side control at the same time. Nice work there by Smith!
A lull in the action here as Smith stalls from top position.

Smith working away diligently from side control. Landing strikes effectively there - that will score him some points on the judges scorecards.
Smith controlling from side mount.
Waters is trying to improve his position.
Smith scores with a couple of nice shots to the head there. The referee takes a look at Waters to see if he's OK.
Waters takes a couple of big shots there - the referee warns him that he has to defend himself better.
Waters tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Smith wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
Waters on the wrong end of some ground and pound.

Waters is rocked!
Smith in side control here. He's dropped a big elbow there and Waters looks hurt! Oh, he is hurt! Smith turns on the heat and pounds him out for a TKO victory! Good killer instinct there!
