PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Del Werthers (ranked 1460 p4p, 157 weight class) and Beef Stew (ranked 1675 p4p, 173 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 6 - 5 - 0, fighting out of New York, Del Werthers!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 5 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Beef Stew!
The judges for this bout are Sosuke Kotani, Taro Takaoka and Shigeki Fujiwara.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Werthers lands a glancing blow to the side of Stew's head.
Stew swings and misses with a hook to the body.
Werthers swung with a counter right hand that didn't connect.
Stew with a nice looking leg kick. You could hear that one land in a back row.
Stew feints and then cracks Werthers's leading leg with a nice low kick. He's obviously looking to slow Werthers down.
Stew ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Werthers moves away.
Werthers looks to throw the jab but Stew is out of range.
Beef Stew seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
A combination from Stew does no damage.
Left hook, right uppercut from Stew.
Some wild striking there from Werthers.
Werthers definitely looks more muscular than last time we saw him fight.
A nice inside leg kick there by Stew. That's going to slow Werthers down.
Stew throws a lazy right hand but Werthers sees it coming a mile off and sidesteps it easily.

Werthers sees a low kick coming and goes to check it, but it's actually a body kick and it thuds into his unprotected ribs.
Stew lands a nice shot to the body.
Stew tries to clinch but Werthers moves out of range.

Stew dips down and scores with a jab to the body.
Werthers dives in and grabs Stew's left leg, looking for a takedown. Stew pushes down on Werthers's head and hops out.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
Werthers moves out of range of the strikes.
Werthers attempts a counter takedown but Stew avoids it well and moves away.
Stew misses with a looping left.
Werthers changes levels looking for a counter takedown but doesn't commit.
Stew thows a left - swing and a miss!
Werthers changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Stew tries to avoid it but Werthers manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Stew to the ground. Stew escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Werthers throws a series of punches but Stew moves out of range.
Stew fakes a jab and scores with a low kick.
Stew bobs and weaves and then throws a good body kick.
Stew throws a jab to the body, straight down the pipe. Boom. That sent Werthers stumbling backwards but he manages to regain his composure quickly.

Stew tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.

Werthers closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Stew to the mat! Stew manages to get full guard.
Stew trying to keep a closed guard but Werthers is proving a slippery customer.
Werthers stays in close to Stew's body and controls the position.
Werthers stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Stew swivels though and keeps the full guard.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Stew looking for a sweep. Not yet Stew, not yet.
Werthers stops Stew from standing up.
Stew is trying to control the position but Werthers postures up.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Stew keeping moving, preventing Werthers from controlling successfully.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Stew controls Werthers momentarily but Werthers frees himself.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.

Werthers swung with a counter punch to the body but it didn't connect.

Stew misses the shot to the body.
A little feinted left hand from Werthers on the counter but he doesn't commit to it.

Beef Stew seems to be getting the better of the standup.

and Werthers counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Werthers wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Stew, who protects the arm well.
Werthers tries to move to mount but Stew blocks the move with his legs.
Stew regains half guard there - taking advantage of Werthers's attempt to lay and pray for a moment.
Werthers is nestled in close to Stew, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure.
Stew has found himself in a tricky position here. He's been working his transitions in training so let's see if he can work his way out of it.
Werthers seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime.
Stew is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Werthers's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Werthers's back!

Stew thows a huge left but connects with the canvas and not his opponent.

Stew is trying to stick to Werthers's back but Werthers is turning into Stew. He's managed to reverse the position - now he's in Stew's guard. Polite applause from the crowd in appreciation of some nice Jiu Jitsu by Werthers.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Stew uses good footwork to get in and out and land a nice right hand before Werthers has time to react.

Stew is clearly trying to counter these attacks from Werthers with a body shot.
Del Werthers is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Stew uses good head movement to avoid the hook from Werthers.
Werthers avoids a lazy jab quite easily.
Werthers takes an uppercut right on the jaw but it doesn't phase him.
An inside leg kick from Werthers misses.
And an attempted straight right on the counter from Stew! But no joy.

Werthers is hobbling a little on that front leg after taking quite a few leg kicks so far in this fight.

Beef Stew comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I've got Stew winning every round here. Surely the decision will go his way and he'll pick up a well deserved decision victory. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.

After the fight, Beef Stew was humble in paying tribute to his opponent but made it clear he wants to go on to bigger and better things. It seemed to go down well with the crowd who cheered him loudly.
