PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Lucio Valdez (ranked 7268 p4p, 0 weight class) and Alex Kent (ranked 5413 p4p, 0 weight class). Kent has chosen Ready for war as his entrance music. Rumors backstage are that the fighters have been paid to keep it standing but we know that would never happen in MMA!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Lucio Valdez!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Alex Kent!
The judges for this bout are Frank Antenori, and Jack Bonds.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Valdez gets tackled into the cage by Kent. Kent maintains the clinch.

Kent manages to pull guard. Let's see whether he can land a sub off his back.
Valdez postures up and lands a big shot to Kent's brow.
Kent managing to control the position.

Kent had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Valdez defends it easily.
Valdez with a flurry of punches that miss.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Valdez throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent.
Kent utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
Valdez postures up.
Valdez prevents Kent from getting back to his feet.
Kent has his hands on Valdez's head, controlling the position.

Kent looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
Kent throws a nice elbow from the bottom.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Valdez throws an elbow that misses. Kent uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Valdez's guard. Nice move by Kent!

Valdez is trying to keep Kent in close.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Kent is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.

Kent decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow.
Valdez avoids the clinch attempt nicely.

Kent drives through with a takedown into Valdez's guard. Let's see what he can do from the top position.
Valdez is looking to stand back up... there's a bit of a scramble and Kent dives into side control.

Valdez is trying to improve his position.

Kent is pausing for a moment. What's he doing? It looks like he's clearing his nose. Oh dude! He's shot a load of snot all down Valdez's shoulder. That is not cool.
Kent slips into full mount, dodging the strikes by Valdez.
Kent wants to control the pace but Valdez is squirming around nicely.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Kent controlling the position easily from mount.
It looks like Kent might be adopting somewhat of a lay and pray gameplan here, which I'm sure won't go down too well with the paying fans in attendance... Or the ring announcers come to think of it.
Valdez really is a fat lump.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Valdez trying to punch from the bottom. They're landing but they're really not going to hurt Kent.
Kent content just to control the position here.
Valdez wants to improve position but instead he's given up his back.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Kent is working really hard to secure the rear naked choke. Valdez defends successfully for a significant amount of time. Both fighters are looking very determined.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Alex Kent dominated that round.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!



Kent instigates a clinch.

Kent decides to pull guard.
Valdez throws an elbow that misses. Kent uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Valdez's guard. Nice move by Kent!


Valdez working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Kent doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Kent manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Kent forces his way into half guard.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Valdez wants to control but Kent passes into side.

Valdez throws Kent to one side and escapes!

Kent moves in looking to clinch but Valdez pushes him off.
Kent misses with a takedown

and Valdez counters by clinching up.
Kent has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Valdez is trying to work out of this bad position, with his back against the cage.

Valdez is fighting off a takedown attempt but Kent is just too persistent for him and manages to trip Valdez to the mat. Valdez regains guard as soon as the fighters hit the mat.
Valdez has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Kent wants to control from the top but Valdez keeps moving.

Valdez looking for a guillotine here but Kent defends easily.

Kent distracts Valdez with his right hand and drops a big elbow with his other arm.

Valdez is looking for a triangle but Kent pushes his legs off easily.
Valdez is trying to hold Kent in close to prevent damage but Kent has managed to pass into half guard.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Valdez looks like he's trying to stand up.
The referee calls for the fighters to work.
Kent working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that.

Kent wants to work for an arm triangle but Valdez is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.

Valdez is refusing to be controlled, as Kent sits in half guard.
Kent takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.
Kent passes to side control.
Kent wants to lay and pray for a moment but Valdez keeps working.
Kent is in a good position here but he's just trying to control... And he's not even managing to do that successfully.
Valdez is positioning himself to get back to half guard.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

Kent decides to take the fight back to the feet.
Valdez stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Valdez wants it to stay on the feet.
Kent goes for a double leg but Valdez avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Valdez continues to drive forward.
Valdez wants to take advantage of his opponent's missed offense by moving into the clinch.
Lucio Valdez has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Alex Kent.

Kent drives through and clinches with Valdez against the cage.
Kent lands a right hand.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Valdez jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Kent walks away with a smile on his face. Valdez gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.
Valdez displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Kent.
Valdez is looking to counter the offense by Kent and move into the clinch.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Alex Kent showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. Let's hear some noise people - this is the final round!


Valdez fails with a takedown attempt from distance.
A head kick misses from Kent.
As Kent looks to move away, Valdez throws a big counter combo but Kent just gets out of the way.
Kent tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
It looked like Valdez was looking amped, ready to throw a big counter but didn't commit.
Valdez shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Kent pinned against the cage. Kent gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Kent tries to clinch there but Valdez circles away.

Kent throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Valdez tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Kent is in Valdez's guard.

Valdez kicks off Kent and gets to his feet.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Kent scores with a takedown into Valdez's guard.

Valdez escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Kent gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Kent sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Valdez's guard.
Kent wants to free his trapped foot but Valdez is holding on for dear life with his legs.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Kent decides he's had enough of the ground and stands up.

Valdez gets caught napping as Kent dives in and scores a takedown. Valdez manages to retain guard.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Valdez wants to get back to his feet but he's too absorbed in his own little project and Kent manages to pass to side control.
Kent content to sit in half guard and control for a moment.

Kent is controlling the pace.

Valdez looking for submissions from an awkward position here.
Kent passes the half guard and he's now in mount! Big trouble for Valdez!

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Kent has his opponent pinned against the cage, landing some nasty ground and pound that is really making a bit of a mess out of Valdez's face.
Valdez is looking to improve his position but Kent isn't that keen on the idea.
Kent tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.
Kent postures up and cracks his opponent a couple of times before moving back into close ground control. Valdez looks a forlorn figure.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Valdez tries to reverse the position but Kent maintains control.
Lucio Valdez has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Alex Kent is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.

Alex Kent comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I've got Kent winning every round here. Surely the decision will go his way and he'll pick up a well deserved decision victory. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
