PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a super heavyweight MMA rules bout between Paul Beecher (ranked 909 p4p, 44 weight class) and Carlos Ruas (ranked 1058 p4p, 53 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the super heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 19 - 11 - 0, fighting out of New York, Paul Beecher!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 18 - 13 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Carlos Ruas!
The judges for this bout are James Glass, Phil Schofield and Colin Fotheringham.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Ruas feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
Ruas stands and throws Beecher's legs to the side, diving into side control.
Ruas tries to move into full mount but can't pass Beecher's legs.
Ruas trying to control the position but Beecher is working away.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Beecher can't do much from the bottom here.
Ruas works to advance to full mount. Beecher defends for a few seconds but eventually he succumbs.

Ruas with some aggressive grappling here. He's looking for submissions here, rather than waiting for the opportunity to counter.

Well, with Ruas on his back, surely it's only a matter of time before Beecher is tapping out... Can he escape the position?

Ruas is working for the rear naked choke. He has one arm under the chin but Beecher has hold of the other arm. A bit of a stalemate here.
I really don't envy Beecher right now.
Beecher covering up well under a barage of strikes.
Ruas gets his hands free as Beecher looks to control.
Beecher has improved his flexibility recently so we will have to see if he can use that to his advantage.

Ruas is controlling the pace.
Ruas wants to pass the guard but Beecher is defending well.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

Beecher takes a big shot to the head but keeps on trying to improve his position.

Ruas is going oldschool here, as he tries to force Beecher to tap using a forearm choke. This isn't 1993 though, so Beecher shrugs it off.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Ruas dives in for a single leg takedown but Beecher sprawls and the fighters end up clinched against the cage.
Beecher really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
Ruas misses with an uppercut.

Beecher scores with a sloppy punch to the body. Not much technique there but it did the business.
Ruas is pinned up against the cage taking some big shots here. The referee is looking closely deciding whether he should stop the fight.


It looks like Carlos Ruas has been cut.
A looping hook to the body misses from Beecher. Ruas does a little dance to reset his feet.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Ruas shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Beecher pinned against the cage. Beecher gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.

Ruas can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Beecher is looking to escape.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Ruas wants to control the pace but Beecher is squirming around nicely.
Ruas wants to take Beecher's back here but Beecher is holding on to an arm, himself looking to escape.
Beecher is trying to get to the cage to help him get back to his feet.

Ruas wants to finish this one by submission but Beecher is holding onto his waist, trying to prevent any attacks from Ruas.

Carlos Ruas showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

Ruas changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Beecher looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.
You can see the frustration on Beecher's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.

Beecher regains half guard there - taking advantage of Ruas's attempt to lay and pray for a moment.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Carlos Ruas is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Ruas wants to sweep here but Beecher controlling him for the moment.

Carlos Ruas comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Ruas has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
