PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Mike Francisco (ranked 4806 p4p, 472 weight class) and Taku Nuku (ranked 4704 p4p, 471 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Mike Francisco!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Taku Nuku!
The judges for this bout are Roger Salmon, Chris Saunders and Colin Fray.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Francisco closes the distance and clinches up with Nuku, looking for a takedown. Francisco pushes Nuku against the cage but Nuku circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Nuku with the counter takedown but Francisco avoids it easily.

Francisco moves into range and clinches up with Nuku.

Nuku has moved round to his opponent's back and is looking for a suplex! Oh snap! He's tossed Francisco clear over his head and slammed him to the mat!
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.
Nuku just keeping the dominant position. He can't wait too long though, otherwise the referee will stand them back up.
Nuku is looking to finish with some ground and pound!
Nuku avoiding Francisco 's attempts to control his hands.
Nuku is looking to control Francisco but Francisco is wriggling around and keeping busy.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Francisco tries to escape the position - he's now mounted. Is that better or worse? Hard to tell!
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Nuku trying to control but he's not successful this time.
Nuku is in a good position here but he's just trying to control... And he's not even managing to do that successfully.
Francisco working to try and regain half guard.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Francisco wants to control but Nuku is having none of it.
Francisco can't escape the position.
Francisco looks out of his depth in this position - he's holding on tight.
Francisco keeping his composure momentarily, calmly looking to get back to half guard.

Nuku stands up from the dominant position. He obviously fancies his chances standing.
The sound of bone on bone echoes around the arena as Nuku checks a leg kick.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Nuku throws a wild combination but nothing lands.
Francisco closes this distance looking for a takedown but Nuku circles away.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Francisco is defended easily by Nuku.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Mike Francisco. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Nuku blocks a low kick nicely.

Nuku moves into the clinch.
Nuku keeps the fight in the clinch, despite Francisco's efforts to push away.
A quick uppercut on the inside from Francisco.
Nuku is trying to pull guard but Francisco has him pressed against the cage.
Nuku scores with a shoulder strike.

Francisco manages to pull guard.
Francisco will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.

Francisco has a closed guard, preventing Nuku from standing up.
Nuku with a nice head shot there.
Nuku trying to control but Francisco is working from the bottom.
Francisco on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Francisco tries to get out of the position.
Francisco is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.
Nuku has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Francisco is proving hard to escape from.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Nuku stands and throws Francisco's legs to the side, diving into side control.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Taku Nuku dominated that round.
That's time! Francisco's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.


Francisco fails with the takedown.
Nuku shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Francisco as he avoids it easily.
Nuku has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Nuku tries to clinch but Francisco moves out of range.
Francisco tries to clinch but Nuku is having none of it.
Nuku is looking to clinch but Francisco is avoiding it.
Nuku is looking to take this fight into the clinch.

Nuku feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.

Francisco has butterfly guard. He's looking to stand up here. He pushes Nuku off him and springs to his feet nicely. The crowd applauds.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Mike Francisco is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.

Francisco has Nuku up against the cage in a clinch.

Francisco stops a takedown attempt from Nuku.
Francisco tries to pull guard but Nuku forces him back to his feet, against the cage.
Nuku tries to break the clinch but Francisco is controlling the position.
Francisco tries to pull guard but Nuku holds him up against the cage and eventually Francisco drops back down to his feet.

Francisco has clasped his hands together around Nuku's back... aaand, he's got a takedown into side control. Nicely done.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Francisco stands up and we're back to a striking position.
Nuku shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.

Nuku tries to score a power double leg takedown but Francisco sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Nuku somewhat.
Nuku avoids a kick to the body.

Francisco closes the distance and clinches.
Nuku fails to pull guard.
Both guys are working to get underhooks.
Nuku is working for takedown but Francisco is calmly controlling the position for now.

Francisco manages to break the clinch.
Nuku fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Francisco avoids it really well and circles away.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Francisco clinches with his opponent.

Francisco manages to break the clinch.
Francisco leaves Nuku with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.

Nuku gets a double leg takedown into Francisco's guard.

Francisco has scooted to the edge of the canvas and used the cage to get back to his feet. Nuku has stuck on his opponent and is forcing him back against the cage.
Francisco really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
Francisco tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Nuku smiles and moves away.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Francisco avoids the clinch attempt nicely.

Nuku gets caught napping as Francisco dives in and scores a takedown. Nuku manages to retain guard.
Nuku should think about turning a few of those tyres round his middle into muscle if he wants people to take him seriously as an athlete.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Francisco postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
Francisco throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent.
Nuku is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Nuku bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Francisco's guard.

Nuku throws a big right hand that misses.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Mike Francisco dominated that second round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. Let's hear some noise people - this is the final round!


Nuku avoids a low kick by using good footwork.

Francisco has closed the distance and engaged Nuku in a clinch.
Nuku is trying to force a seperation but Francisco has the dominant position.
Francisco avoiding damage as Nuku throws knees to the body.

Nuku jumps into guard, dragging Francisco to the mat.
Francisco is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.
Francisco throwing strikes from guard but Nuku blocks nicely.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Francisco is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.

Francisco controls the pace of the fight for a moment.
Francisco postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.

Nuku instigates a clinch.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Francisco prevents Nuku from breaking the clinch.

Francisco manages to break the clinch.

Nuku moves into the clinch.
Nuku has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Francisco avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.
Come on Nuku - let's have some action - none of this stalling nonsense.

Francisco has Nuku pressed up against the cage. He's trying to work for a single leg takedown. Francisco pulls back from the cage and twists to the side, sending Nuku tumbling to the mat - Francisco dives into Nuku's guard.

Francisco postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Nuku is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Francisco, into his guard.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Nuku stands and throws Francisco's legs to the side, diving into side control.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Francisco gets one leg under and gets the fight to half guard.
Nuku lands a big shot. The thud that echoes around the arena is like music to the fans' ears.
Nuku working Francisco over with strikes.
Francisco controlling the position well.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Nuku trying to control the action but Francisco is working from the bottom.

Nuku is working for a submission of some sort.
Taku Nuku has got the better of the ground game so far.
Francisco is not content to let Nuku control the position.

And that's the end of the fight!
Taku Nuku comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Nuku has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
