PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between KESTUTIS SMERNOVAS (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Rafael Muniz (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, KESTUTIS SMERNOVAS!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Rafael Muniz!
The judges for this bout are Emerson Jorge, Leandro Rodrigues and Matheus Silva.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

SMERNOVAS pushes Muniz up against the cage in a clinch.
Muniz is working for takedown but SMERNOVAS is calmly controlling the position for now.
SMERNOVAS landing knees to the body. They look like they could hurt.
Muniz looks gassed!
SMERNOVAS has Muniz pushed against the cage.
Muniz prevents a takedown attempt there.

SMERNOVAS's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Muniz keeps the fight on the outside.
SMERNOVAS dances in quickly and lands a nice inside leg kick on Muniz. That did some damage!
Muniz is looking to land body kicks.
SMERNOVAS fails in his attempt to clinch.
SMERNOVAS doesn't manage to clinch there - Muniz circles away.
SMERNOVAS throws a head kick that misses.
SMERNOVAS fails with an attempt to clinch.
KESTUTIS SMERNOVAS seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
SMERNOVAS tries to clinch there but Muniz circles away.
SMERNOVAS scores with a slapping inside leg kick.
SMERNOVAS tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Muniz paws at him with a jab and circles away.

Muniz closes the distance and clinches up with SMERNOVAS, looking for a takedown. Muniz pushes SMERNOVAS against the cage but SMERNOVAS circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
SMERNOVAS tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Muniz paws at him with a jab and circles away.
SMERNOVAS tries to clinch but Muniz is having none of it.
SMERNOVAS fails with a takedown attempt.
SMERNOVAS shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.

SMERNOVAS closes the distance and pushes Muniz back into the cage.
A nice glancing elbow lands by SMERNOVAS.
Muniz drops down looking for an ankle pick but SMERNOVAS pulls his leg out and moves away.
Muniz throws a right and a left that SMERNOVAS avoids nicely.
SMERNOVAS looks to clinch

and Muniz decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in SMERNOVAS's guard.
Muniz trying to control the position from guard on top but SMERNOVAS is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

SMERNOVAS is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
SMERNOVAS keeping moving, preventing Muniz from controlling successfully.

Muniz preventing the sweep.
Muniz loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Muniz controlling from the top position.

SMERNOVAS looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.

SMERNOVAS is looking for a triangle here but Muniz uses the submission attempt to pass into side control.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that KESTUTIS SMERNOVAS will probably get the nod.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.



Muniz moves into the clinch successfully.
SMERNOVAS wants to break the clinch but can't.
SMERNOVAS tries to pull guard but Muniz won't allow it.
SMERNOVAS stalling here - the referee won't stand for too much of that.

Muniz drags the fight down to the ground.
SMERNOVAS won't allow Muniz to sweep him here.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

SMERNOVAS is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! Muniz is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! Muniz has escaped and now he's on top!
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Muniz is stalling in the full guard.

Muniz's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.

SMERNOVAS isolates an arm and boxes in a triangle. Muniz stacks SMERNOVAS on his neck as he steps over and passes to the side. He's now in a much more dominant position where he can look to do some serious damage. Nice move by Muniz!

That's two minutes gone in the round.

SMERNOVAS is trying to get back to half guard.

Muniz is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, SMERNOVAS has escaped the position, nice work there.
Muniz wants to lay and pray for a moment but SMERNOVAS keeps working.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.

Muniz thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Rafael Muniz showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. This is the final round!



Muniz drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.
SMERNOVAS is not in a great position here, taking some shots.
SMERNOVAS tries to bench press Muniz off him but Muniz keeps the position.
SMERNOVAS could do with loosing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.
SMERNOVAS sneaks a leg under to get back to half guard.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
SMERNOVAS is refusing to be controlled, as Muniz sits in half guard.

SMERNOVAS is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.

SMERNOVAS with the active half guard here but Muniz passes nicely into side control.
SMERNOVAS is looking for a sweep.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.

Muniz scores with a takedown into SMERNOVAS's guard.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

Muniz has knee on belly and now moves to full mount! Trouble for SMERNOVAS!
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Muniz takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.

And that's the end of the fight!
Rafael Muniz comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Muniz has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
