PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between John Smith (ranked 1181 p4p, 162 weight class) and Iain Reilly (ranked 3293 p4p, 380 weight class). Reilly has chosen Dubliners - Fields of Athenry as his entrance music. I can't wait for this one - let's get the fighter introductions out of the way and get this one started!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 10 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, John Smith!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 20 - 25 - 0, fighting out of New York, Iain Reilly!
The judges for this bout are Lou da Vinci, Steve Montenegro and Russell Pearce.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Reilly lands a right hook to the body.
Reilly throws an uppercut from half a mile away. Smith sees it coming and avoids it easily.

Smith throwing a counter right hand but Reilly manages to avoid it.
Reilly misses with a lunging right hand
and Smith counters with a left and a right that stings Reilly.
Reilly throws a body shot but no joy.
Smith swung with a counter right hand that didn't connect.
A bone on bone clash there as Reilly blocks the leg kick.
Reilly throws a jab when Smith was well out of range.
Reilly throws a hook but Smith avoids it easily.
Reilly misses with a double jab.
Smith buckles his opponent's knee momentarily with a nice leg kick.
Smith takes a jab on the nose there. A little bit of blood seems to be coming out. Hopefully that won't affect his breathing.
Reilly thows a left - swing and a miss!
Reilly's hands are dropping dangerously low here and Smith connects clean with a right hook that sends him down to one knee! Reilly scrambles back to his feet.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Smith is looking to slow Reilly down with leg kicks.
Smith lands with a slapping head kick.
Smith shoots in for a takedown but Reilly shows good takedown defense.

Reilly takes a big uppercut there. He seems a bit wobbly but no, he's OK.
Smith misses with a hook
and Reilly connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.
Smith throws a right hand that Reilly ducks under and follows up with a left that Reilly also avoids with ease.
Smith lands a leg kick and bounces back out of range.
Reilly takes a thudding leg kick, right into the meat of the thigh.
Smith misses with a hook.
Reilly walks straight into an uppercut. Luckily it didn't land flush.
Smith darts in and out, connecting with a jab.
Smith slips a straight right by Reilly.
Reilly misses with a straight left.
Smith throwing a counter right hand but Reilly manages to avoid it.
Smith just misses with a punch to the body.
Reilly takes a swing at Smith's ribcage but misses.
The fighters circling - Reilly throws out the jab but it was never going to land.

Reilly closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Reilly lands in his opponent's guard.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Reilly postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.

Smith wants to sweep but no luck.
Reilly throws a strike but Smith rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.

Reilly controls Smith momentarily but Smith frees himself.
Reilly wants to control here, rather than go for any submissions from the bottom. At least for now.
Reilly bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Smith's guard.

Reilly is looking to work some ground and pound but Smith has wrist control.
Reilly in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Smith avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
Reilly content to strike from guard, landing some decent shots.

The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.

A close round but Iain Reilly will probably get the nod.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.

Reilly changes levels for a counter takedown but doesn't follow through with his attempt.
Smith digs a good body shot into Reilly's ribs.
Smith looks to land a combination but Reilly avoids it well.
Smith uses decent footwork to sidestep a right hand from Reilly.
Good standup being displayed there by Smith as he connects with a hook.
Reilly throws out a loose jab but Smith uses good head movement to avoid it.
Smith misses with a head kick.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Smith connects with a jab.
Reilly misses with an uppercut. Smith saw that one coming.
Reilly throws a one two combo.


It looks like John Smith has been cut.
Smith tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Reilly paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Reilly lands with a cross.

Reilly has his front leg slapped to the side - a nice low kick landing there from Smith.
Smith works his jab well there, keeping his opponent at a distance.
Smith dodges the punch combination from Reilly.
Reilly misses with a takedown
and Smith counters with a slapping leg kick.
Smith tries to close the distance and clinch but Reilly swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
Reilly shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Smith as he avoids it easily.

Smith scores with a decent looking hook.
Smith moves out of range as Reilly strikes.
John Smith seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Reilly gets his head snapped back by a nice shot there.

Reilly just misses with a punch to the body.
Smith swings wildly with a hook that is half blocked by Reilly.
Reilly lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Smith circles away quickly and effectively.
Reilly throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
Smith scores with a leg kick.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
A decent looking cross lands there for Smith.
Reilly jabs Smith right on the nose. Smith blinks but takes it well.
Smith lands a jab. Then a cross. Then finally a nice hook to the body. Good work there by Smith.
Reilly tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Smith was well out of range. Poor timing from Reilly.

and Smith counters with a nice uppercut.
A jab from Smith finds it's way through Reilly's defenses.

Reilly scores with a shot to the side of Smith's head.
Reilly misses with a punch on the inside.
Smith blocks a couple of punches on the inside.
Reilly doesn't land with the attempted body shot.
Smith swings away with an uppercut that misses.
Reilly tries to work over Smith's body with a swooping hook but it only glances the target.
Smith's head jolts backwards as he takes an uppercut right on the button!

Reilly manages to break the clinch.
Smith lands a jab followed by a nice looking cross.
Reilly throws the left hand but Smith avoids the punch easily.
Smith appears to be looking for a counter punch to the body.
Smith takes a step towards his opponent and connects with a left hand, before circling away.
Reilly keeps the fight on the outside.
Reilly feints the counter takedown.

Reilly lands a jab to the head.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.

John Smith is winning the standup battle so far.
Smith defending well as Reilly loads up on a big left hand.
The crowd cheers as Reilly lands an impressive looking overhand right. Smith doesn't seem phased though.
Smith tries to close the distance and clinch but Reilly swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
Smith slips a straight right by Reilly.
Smith cracks the inside of Reilly's front leg.
Smith tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Reilly swivels and escapes.
Reilly's leg has a nasty welt from taking a succession of leg kicks. That must be slowing him down.
A looping hook to the body misses from Reilly. Smith does a little dance to reset his feet.
Reilly misses with an uppercut
and Smith counters with a lovely shot to the body.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

John Smith dominated that second round.
The cut man is working on John Smith's cut.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! This is the final round!

Reilly throws a right and a left that both miss.

Reilly has a nice red mark on his side after a thudding body kick by Smith.
Smith shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Reilly pinned against the cage. Reilly gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.

Smith lands a straight punch to the body, keeping Reilly at a distance.

Smith takes a hook to the side of the head. I wonder if that's got his ears ringing.
Reilly avoids a lazy jab quite easily.
And Reilly tries to counter it with a takedown but Smith pushes his down on his head and steps out.
Smith tries to close the distance and clinch up but Reilly swats him away and circles back towards the center.
Smith slips under a jab from Reilly.
Smith misses the shot to the body.
Reilly now looks to counter with a shot at the body.
Smith throws out a token jab with nothing on it.
Smith's corner calls for a 1-2. Smith obliges with the 1 part as he scores the single shot and moves back out of range.

and Smith counters with a three punch combo that has Reilly backing up. Reilly nods at Smith to acknowledge the strikes.

Reilly lands a straight punch to the body, keeping Smith at a distance.

Reilly lands a jab to the head.
Danga de danga de dang - Smith scores with a four punch combination!
Reilly thows a left - swing and a miss!
Reilly keeping a good distance there, avoiding the body shot.
Reilly's hands are dropping dangerously low here and Smith connects clean with a right hook that sends him down to one knee! Reilly scrambles back to his feet.
Smith throws an off balance right hand
and Reilly cracks him with a counter punch right on the button.
Reilly connects with a single shot there.


Smith is rocked!
Reilly throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
Oh Smith is still all over the place! His legs are completely gone! Will he be able to recover?!!
BAM! Reilly delivers a spinning backfist that drops Smith like a ragdoll! This is all oooooveeeer! He was out before he hit the ground!

An out of breath Iain Reilly thanked his loyal fans in his post fight interview, giving them credit for his success over the course of his career.
