PBP Commentary |
Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between André 3000 (ranked 1377 p4p, 155 weight class) and Mono Loco (ranked 3105 p4p, 283 weight class). 3000 comes to the cage accompanied by Nobody by Skindred. Mono Loco told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
10 - 5 - 0, fighting out of New York, André 3000! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
6 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Mono Loco! The judges for this bout are Jack Bonds, Don Winkell and Timothy Bukovac.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! A lazy left from 3000 finds it's target.
It looks like Mono Loco has been cut. 3000 lands a jab to the nose. 3000 throws an ugly left hook that misses
and Loco decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in 3000's guard. Loco seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up. Loco stands and throws 3000's legs to the side, diving into side control. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Loco trying to control the action but 3000 is working from the bottom.
That's one minute gone in the round. Loco thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead. 3000 is looking for a sweep. Loco tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though. 3000 is not content to let Loco control the position.
That's two minutes gone in the round. The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight. 3000 parries the strikes from Loco easily there. Loco is wary of posturing up too much because it might enable 3000 to escape.
3000 tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Loco wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control. Loco is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, 3000 has escaped the position, nice work there. Loco wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by 3000, who protects the arm well. Loco is moving around in side control but his primary objective seems to be to maintain the position.
That's three minutes gone in the round. 3000 tries to get back to half guard but can't. Loco trying to control the position but 3000 is working away. The referee asks Loco politely if he wouldn't mind getting on with it and actually doing something. Loco prefers to stall for the moment though. 3000 tries to improve position but can't. The strikes coming from Loco are missing the target in this wave of attacks. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
That's four minutes gone in the round. The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so. Loco controls the position from side control.
The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity. Loco feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position. Loco sitting in guard here, content to control. Loco looking to sit in guard and control but 3000 gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top. Loco controls 3000 momentarily but 3000 frees himself. Loco throwing his legs up looking for a triangle.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out! 3000 postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Mono Loco dominated that round. The cut man is working on Mono Loco's cut. The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!
3000 throws a jab, cross combination which is slipped
and Loco counters with a shoot takedown. 3000 fights it but they end up in guard. 3000 looking for a sweep. Not yet 3000, not yet. Loco engaging in some classic timewasting tactics. 3000 keeping moving, preventing Loco from controlling successfully. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Loco's corner is telling him to maintain position.
That's one minute gone in the round. Loco is continuing to stall. 3000 is looking for a triangle but Loco pushes his legs off easily.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity. Loco moves out of range as 3000 strikes. Loco tries a counter takedown but it's more of a dummy move, and he uses it to push himself away. 3000 darts in and out, connecting with a jab. 3000 lands with a hook. Loco tried to avoid it but it clipped the top of his head. Nice body kick from 3000. Loco takes a jab right on the nose. That must have hurt but he shrugs his shoulders and looks to return the favor. 3000 dances in quickly and lands a nice inside leg kick on Loco. That did some damage! Loco misses with a takedown and 3000 counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Loco fails with the takedown. Loco throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. 3000 tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Loco is in 3000's guard. The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so! Loco controlling from the top position. 3000 is trying to keep Loco in close.
3000 is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Loco defends well. 3000 wants to control the position but Loco says "no thanks buddy" and passes to half guard.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Loco trying to control from half guard but 3000 is working away. 3000 gets full guard. Loco slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard. 3000 working a defensive guard here.
Loco seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up. 3000 is looking to slow Loco down with leg kicks. Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out! Loco tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but 3000 defends well and Loco ends up having to push 3000 into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch. André 3000 has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Mono Loco. 3000 misses with an uppercut
and Loco counters with a nice double leg into side control. 3000 won't be happy with that. Loco goes for an armbar here - this could be all over! But no, 3000 has escaped beautifully and is now on top in side control! Oh, that's unlucky for Loco but great work by 3000. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
That was a close second round but I would say that André 3000 will probably get the nod. The cut man is working on Mono Loco's cut. That's time! 3000's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. This is the final round!
Loco has his head slapped from side to side by a 3 punch combination. That must have hurt him. 3000 waving his hands out in front of him, looking to distract Loco. 3000 is using his height advantage well here, landing a good percentage of his punches. 3000 swings wildly with a right hand that was never going to find it's target. Loco tries a counter takedown but it's more of a dummy move, and he uses it to push himself away. Loco closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. 3000 did well to prevent Loco getting side control. Loco wants to lay and pray for a moment but 3000 keeps working. Loco seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense. 3000 is in a tricky position but he's been working on his transitions down at Hippie Palace, so we'll see if he gets out of it. Loco is working for a kimura but 3000 is defending it quite comfortably.

That's one minute gone in the round. Loco stalling away here and it's allowed 3000 to slip out his trapped foot and regain full guard. 3000 trying to keep a closed guard but Loco is proving a slippery customer.
Loco trying to control the position from guard on top but 3000 is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work. Loco preventing the sweep.
That's two minutes gone in the round. My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer. Loco looking to sit in guard and control but 3000 gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.
3000 content to sit in guard, stalling... Great. Oh but he could get punished here because Loco has locked up a guillotine! Loco's face is contorted as he sqeezes tight on the submission attempt - will he finish? 3000 is holding on here and Loco must be using up a lot of energy. 3000 has gone limp! He's out! He's out cold! Loco gets to his feet, tossing aside his stricken foe. Arms raised, he milks the applause from the crowd. Great submission!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:33 of round 3, we have a winner by way of Submission (Guillotine). Mono Loco! During a confident post fight interview, Mono Loco thanked all his fans. He seemed very genuine when describing how motivated his fans keep him.
