PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Matthew Mcguire (ranked 6175 p4p, 564 weight class) and Kyle Smith (ranked 5926 p4p, 554 weight class). Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Matthew Mcguire!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Kyle Smith!
The judges for this bout are Gwen Towbar, Frank Dennis and Chris Downing.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Smith throws a head kick that misses.

Smith has taken the fight to the clinch.
The referee calls for Smith to work.

Smith's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.

Smith gets to the clinch - let's see what his plan is here.
Mcguire tries to score a body lock takedown but Smith shows good agility there to stay on his feet.
Mcguire is working for takedown but Smith is calmly controlling the position for now.
Mcguire drops down looking for an ankle pick but Smith pulls his leg out and moves away.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Matthew Mcguire. That's going to take a lot out of him.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Smith stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Smith wants it to stay on the feet.

Smith feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.

Mcguire uses the cage to get back to his feet.

Smith misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Mcguire has his takedown stuffed

and Smith counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Smith.
Mcguire wants a takedown.

Smith breaks the clinch.
Smith with a body punch. A glancing blow.

Smith clinches up against the cage.

Smith has hold of one of Mcguire's legs. Mcguire is fighting the takedown attempt but Smith gets the trip and lands the takedown into guard.
Smith lands a couple of decent looking shots.
Mcguire knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Smith on the ground.
Smith wants to control from the top but Mcguire keeps moving.
Mcguire wants to get back to his feet but Smith is in a dominant position and won't allow it.

Mcguire has control of Smith's left arm, preventing Smith from doing any damage.
Mcguire wants to hit a switch here but Smith passes into full mount! Oh no, disaster for Mcguire there!
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Mcguire is working to get back to half guard.

Smith wants to finish this one by submission but Mcguire is holding onto his waist, trying to prevent any attacks from Smith.
Mcguire is trying desperately to improve position.
Smith tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.
Mcguire wants to improve position but instead he's given up his back.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Smith keeps control of the position as Mcguire tries to break free.
Smith punches the canvas rather than the man.
Mcguire staying busy and making it hard for Smith to control.
Smith keeps control of the position as Mcguire tries to break free.
Mcguire trying to control the action but Smith just sinks the hooks in.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Smith tries to keep control of the position but Mcguire is staying busy.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Kyle Smith dominated that round.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!



Smith throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Mcguire tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Smith is in Mcguire's guard.
Mcguire is looking to stand back up... there's a bit of a scramble and Smith dives into side control.

Kyle Smith has got the better of the ground game so far.
Mcguire is trying to escape and get back to his feet.
Smith trying to control the action but Mcguire is working from the bottom.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Smith throws an elbow but Mcguire slips to the side and avoids it well.
Mcguire on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Mcguire tries to get out of the position.
Smith trying to control the position but Mcguire is working away.
Smith is maintaining the dominant position - no doubt Mcguire will start to get frustrated soon if he's not already.

Mcguire is trying to get back to half guard.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Smith moving around in side mount but really he's just happy to control for now.
Mcguire keeping his opponent close.
Mcguire is looking to regain half guard here but Smith keeps moving and retains side control.
The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.

Smith looking to score a takedown here. Mcguire is defending well but Smith drives through and ends up in Mcguire's guard.

The fighters are working up against the cage. Mcguire manages to wriggle his way back to his feet, so the fighters are now clinched against the cage.

Smith gets control of Mcguire's arms and successfully pulls guard. Smith will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back.
Smith has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Smith utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.

Smith has managed to work for a loose triangle. I think Mcguire should be able to defend this one pretty easily though. Oh, Smith has tightened it up now! Mcguire should have reacted faster there - he's in big trouble and yes, he's tapped out! This one is all over!
