PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Iain Reilly (ranked 1447 p4p, 197 weight class) and Billy West (ranked 2420 p4p, 303 weight class). Reilly kept the crowd waiting but all that was forgotten when his ring entrance music started. The incomparable musical genius that is Dubliners - Fields of Athenry. West comes into a darkened arena with his song building. Gojira - Shooting Star kicks in, the lights come on and the crowd goes wild! What a showman! Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 21 - 25 - 0, fighting out of New York, Iain Reilly!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 25 - 19 - 0, fighting out of New York, Billy West!
The judges for this bout are David Schapiro, Reed Andrews and Jorge Garcia.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
West fails with an attempt to clinch.
West tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Reilly paws at him with a jab and circles away.

West fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Reilly, pushing him back against the cage.
Reilly tries a shoulder strike but it doesn't do any damage.
West lands an uppercut.
West lands a body shot in the clinch.
Stalling in the clinch from West.
West scores with a nice hook to the head.
West tried to land a shot to the body but connects with Reilly's elbow.
Reilly takes a shot to the head.
West lands with a quick shot inside that doesn't really do much damage.
West misses with a short punch on the inside.
A right handed body shot lands from Reilly.
West tries to pull guard but Reilly holds him up against the cage and eventually West drops back down to his feet.

West manages to pull guard. Let's see whether he can land a sub off his back.

West looks to be working for a triangle here. Oh, it looks like he might have it! Reilly has picked West up and slammed him! West can't keep hold of the triangle and Reilly manages to pass to side control!

West told us pre-fight that he has been working on his escapes in training. Let's see if he can call on some of his new skills to get back to his feet.
Reilly looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks West with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.
Reilly working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that.

Reilly is nestled in close to West, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure.
Reilly thows a huge punch but West dodges it nicely.

West is looking for a sweep. Reilly is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.

The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Reilly connects with a nice short shot to West's temple.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
West is doing well to avoid being mounted. He's controlling the position at the moment.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
West gets back to full guard.
West wants to sweep but no luck.

West is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.

Reilly makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard.
Reilly has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.

West throws his legs up looking to secure a triangle. Oh, that looks pretty tight, I gotta say! Reilly escapes and throws West's legs to the side, diving into side control!

West wants to control but Reilly postures up.
Reilly scores with punches from side control.
West tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Reilly wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
Reilly wants to lay and pray for a moment but West keeps working.
Reilly tries to land with some ground and pound but misses.
West is moving his hips around well on the bottom and has managed to get back to half guard.
West taking some punishment here, with Reilly in his half guard.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
West is pressing down on Reilly's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it.

West uses decent footwork to sidestep a right hand from Reilly.
West shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Reilly pinned against the cage. Reilly gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
West fails with an attempt to clinch.

West has closed the distance and engaged Reilly in a clinch.

Reilly breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Reilly lands with a cross.
Billy West seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
West lands a two punch combo.
Nice sprawl there from Reilly as West shoots in.
Reilly jabbing away but nothing is landing.
West avoids the body shot from Reilly.
West changes levels for a counter takedown but doesn't follow through with his attempt.
West walks straight into an uppercut. Luckily it didn't land flush.

Reilly closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. West did well to prevent Reilly getting side control.

West looking to force a kimura from the bottom here. He's concentrating on that move too much though and Reilly pushes past his half guard into mount!

West is rocked!
Reilly softens up his opponent with a couple of shots there and then CRACK! One massive shot lands there and West is out cold! Reilly jumps to his feet and celebrates on the cage with the fans, who are, quite frankly, going absolutely mental!
