The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Rutledge leaves Silva with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt. As Silva tries to get set, Rutledge tries to push him back and clinch up but Silva manages to avoid the attempt. Silva fails to land the takedown. Silva changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Rutledge looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better. Silva thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead. Rutledge could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely. Rutledge tries to buck Silva off but Silva is having none of it. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Silva tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Silva has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought! Silva working the head and body with strikes. Silva working away.
That's one minute gone in the round. Silva is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Rutledge is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now. Silva in side control, working for a kimura. He's got hold of an arm and he's torquing it... Rutledge is tapping! That's the end of the fight!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:23 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Kimura). Marcus Silva!
