Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Kevin Sykes (ranked 3930 p4p, 0 weight class) and Franklin Dong (ranked 4295 p4p, 0 weight class). Both fighter's entrance songs getting the crowd jumping here.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Kevin Sykes!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Franklin Dong!
The judges for this bout are Trevor Gratis, Ian Loll and Robert Douchet.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Sykes with a lazy takedown attempt
letting Dong counter with a right hand.
Dong misses with a takedown attempt

and Sykes counters with a takedown into side control! That could mean trouble for Dong!
Sykes looking to punish the body of his opponent here but Dong is avoiding damage well.
Dong tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Sykes wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.

Sykes takes a little break here. Dong wants to take advantage but he is being controlled well.
The strikes coming from Sykes are missing the target in this wave of attacks.

Sykes throwing strikes but Dong manages to buck up and roll into a nice reversal - now he's on top in side control!

Dong stands up.
Sykes closes the distance and clinches up with Dong, looking for a takedown. Sykes pushes Dong against the cage but Dong circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Sykes tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Dong defends well and Sykes ends up having to push Dong into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch.

and Dong counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Dong.
Sykes is breathing heavily.
Dong keeps the fight in the clinch, despite Sykes's efforts to push away.
Sykes has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. Dong is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet.

Dong is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Sykes is aware though and is defending well.

Sykes wants to control from the top but Dong keeps moving.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
Dong throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Sykes looks to land a combination but Dong avoids it well.
Kevin Sykes seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Sykes will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.

Dong has taken the fight to the clinch.
Dong tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.

Sykes breaks from the clinch.
Sykes stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Sykes wants it to stay on the feet.
Sykes fails with a takedown attempt from distance.
Dong misses with a takedown attempt - Sykes sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
Sykes throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Dong's waist but Dong gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Sykes off to one side.
Sykes fails to land with a series of punches.

Dong moves into the clinch.
Sykes changes levels and goes for a takedown here. Dong fights it off and pushes away nicely.
Dong shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Sykes as he avoids it easily.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Dong.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Kevin Sykes will probably get the nod.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!


Dong punishes Sykes's body with a nice straight punch.

Dong rushes Sykes and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.

Dong jumps guard and drags Sykes to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back.
Sykes throws a big right hand that misses.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Sykes postures up in Dong's guard and throws a big left but Dong blocks it.
Sykes throws a strike but Dong rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.

Sykes wants to stand and escape but Dong is having none of it.
Dong not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.

Dong stands up from Sykes's guard - Dong perhaps looking for a knockout.

Sykes gets the takedown into side control.

Dong throws his opponent off and manages to get back to his feet! Nicely done!
Sykes tries to score a power double leg takedown but Dong sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Sykes somewhat.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Sykes throws a nice hook to the body that draws an oooh from the crowd.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Dong.
Sykes fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.

Excellent takedown into side control there by Dong.
Sykes tries to wriggle free to get back to his feet but he's given up his back! Oops.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Dong slows the pace down here. Having a little breather whilst he's in a dominant position, looking to rest and regain some energy, ready to go for the finish.

Dong is working really hard to secure the rear naked choke. Sykes defends successfully for a significant amount of time. Both fighters are looking very determined.
Dong biding his time, looking for the opening.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Franklin Dong showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's time! Back to the action! The crowd applaud as we get ready to start the final round!

Kevin Sykes is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Sykes takes a body punch that cleary hurt but he's trying not to show any weakness.
Sykes tries for a takedown but Dong sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.

Dong closes the distance and pushes Sykes back into the cage.
Sykes wants to break the clinch but can't.
An uppercut on the inside fails to land for Sykes.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Dong gets underhooks to prevent Sykes's takedown attempt.

Dong is pulling down on Sykes's head to control his posture.
Sykes postures up and lands some nice ground and pound.
Franklin Dong has got the better of the ground game so far.

Dong utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Sykes accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
Dong preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage.

Dong has his foot on Sykes's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Sykes works his way back into a safe position though.

Dong won't allow Sykes to get back to his feet.

Dong controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.
Sykes wants to stand and escape but Dong is having none of it.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.

Dong decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.
Dong thows a huge punch but Sykes dodges it nicely.
Sykes is looking to escape.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Dong takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Dong is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Sykes sees it coming and defends easily.
Dong throwing shots but Sykes is blocking nicely.
We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.
Dong not doing much here.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.

Dong clinches with his opponent.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Dong jumps guard and drags Sykes to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back.

And that's the end of the fight!
Franklin Dong comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Dong has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
