Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
7 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Ricardo Gracie! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
6 - 14 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Matthew Jenkins! The judges for this bout are Ian Loll, Trevor Gratis and William Peck.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Jenkins swinging wildly here.
A momentary lapse in concentration from Jenkins enables Gracie to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Jenkins manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat. Gracie content to strike from guard, landing some decent shots. Jenkins wants to stand up but Gracie is controlling him. Jenkins keeping moving, preventing Gracie from controlling successfully. Gracie postures up and lands a big shot to Jenkins's brow. Gracie pushing down on Jenkins's thigh, trying to pass to half guard. He's managed it... Nice work. Jenkins wants to get back to his feet. Gracie working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that. Gracie is working for a submission of some sort.
Gracie is working for a kimura but Jenkins is defending it quite comfortably.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Ground and pound from Gracie.
That's one minute gone in the round. Gracie controlling the action here. Jenkins looks like he's trying to stand up.
We've been hearing good reports from Gracie's training camp. Apparently he has been rolling around with some good quality BJJ practitioners and has been sharpening his skills. Let's see if that has an impact on the fight today. Gracie is looking to pass the guard... He's managed it - he's now in full mount! Gracie mounts Jenkins! Really nice guard pass there! Jenkins taking shots to the head.
Jenkins is rocked! Gracie is going oldschool here, as he tries to force Jenkins to tap using a forearm choke. This isn't 1993 though, so Jenkins shrugs it off. Gracie won't let Jenkins get back to his feet... He wants to keep the fight where it is for now. Gracie looking to control and managing it successfully. Gracie working for a submission here. He's tucked his head under his opponent's arm, looking for an arm triangle. He's hopped off into side control, looking to tighten the submission... is it going to work? He's given up a good position looking for it. Jenkins looks OK. Oh, I spoke too soon, he's out! That must have been tighter than I thought! Excellent work there by Gracie! Submission of the night perhaps?
