PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Luke Rockstar (ranked 4270 p4p, 437 weight class) and Matt Quin (ranked 2135 p4p, 262 weight class). Rockstar's entrance music is You're The Best Around. A fine choice. Quin has chosen Captain Jack - Iko Iko as his entrance music. Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 24 - 16 - 1, fighting out of Las Vegas, Luke Rockstar!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 39 - 25 - 4, fighting out of Las Vegas, Matt Quin!
The judges for this bout are George Francis, Robert Twigg and Gwen Towbar.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Quin throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Rockstar pushing out the jab but it's not landing.
A countering left hand to the body from Quin misses.
Quin throws a shot from downtown. Rockstar moves away and avoids it.
Quin throws a body punch but Rockstar moves out of range.

Quin throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Rockstar was covering up waiting for the punch and Quin finishes the takedown easily into guard.
Rockstar throws a couple of weedy looking strikes off his back.
Quin trying to control the position from guard on top but Rockstar is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Quin throws a strike but Rockstar rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.


Quin has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Rockstar can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
Quin controls Rockstar momentarily but Rockstar frees himself.
Quin looks more muscular than last time we saw him. He must have been on the weights.

Rockstar cracks Quin with a solid left hand.

Quin has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Rockstar can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Rockstar is sitting in guard, working some ground and pound.
Quin controls Rockstar momentarily but Rockstar frees himself.

Rockstar avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
Rockstar throws a big right hand that misses.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Quin tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Rockstar cracks Quin with a solid left hand.

Quin looking for submissions from the bottom but instead Rockstar passes into half guard.
Rockstar performing his best blanket impression for a moment.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Rockstar trying to control from half guard but Quin is working away.
Quin slips a foot under and gets full guard. Nice work.
Rockstar pushes down on Quin's leg and manages to get into half guard.

Quin is looking for a sweep. Rockstar is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Rockstar missing with some ground and pound from the half guard.
Quin avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Rockstar.
Quin is trying to get back to full guard.
Rockstar not doing much here.
Rockstar thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.

Quin actively working from the bottom here.
Quin has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Rockstar is working away from the top position though.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Rockstar not throwing his punches with enough precision this time.
Rockstar lands strikes from half guard.
Quin tries to get to full guard but Rockstar has control of the leg.
Rockstar lands with a punch from half guard.
Quin has hold of Rockstar's hands but Rockstar slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow.
Quin moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Quin is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Quin looks to score some points with some ground and pound.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Luke Rockstar will probably get the nod.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.


Quin misses the shot to the body.
Luke Rockstar seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Rockstar moves out of range of the strikes.

Quin shoots in and scores a nice double leg takedown into half guard.
Rockstar is looking for a sweep. Quin is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Quin tries to pass the half guard into mount. Rockstar knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.
Ground and pound from Quin.
Rockstar is looking to improve his position.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Quin seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.
Quin is scoring with some nice ground and pound from the dominant position.

Quin looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Rockstar with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.

Quin is working for a kimura but Rockstar is defending it quite comfortably.
Quin stalling away here and it's allowed Rockstar to slip out his trapped foot and regain full guard.
Quin lands a couple of elbows.

Rockstar looking for a guillotine here but Quin defends easily.
Rockstar manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Quin manages to get himself to full guard.

Quin wants to sweep here but Rockstar controlling him for the moment.

Rockstar trying to control but Quin is working from the bottom.

Quin looking to sweep here. No luck so far.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Quin working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from Rockstar.
Rockstar lands a couple of digs.
Quin can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Rockstar controls the pace.
Rockstar throws an elbow that misses. Quin uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Rockstar's guard. Nice move by Quin!

Quin distracts Rockstar with his right hand and drops a big elbow with his other arm.
Matt Quin has got the better of the ground game so far.
Rockstar keeping moving, preventing Quin from controlling successfully.
Rockstar is avoiding any damage by keeping wrist control.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Rockstar trying to keep a closed guard but Quin is proving a slippery customer.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Matt Quin showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! This is the final round!


Quin's corner calls for a 1-2. Quin obliges with the 1 part as he scores the single shot and moves back out of range.
Quin needs to keep his hands up - Rockstar had a free shot at his head there.
Rockstar uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Quin.
Rockstar lands with a nice low kick. That'll leave a bruise.
Rockstar fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Quin manages to avoid it.
Rockstar thuds a mid kick into his opponent's body. That will wear on Quin if he has to take too many more of those.

and Quin counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Quin.
Quin pushes down on Rockstar's leg and manages to get into half guard.
Rockstar trying to control here but he's found himself mounted! Oh no!
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
The crowd growing excited in anticipation of a finish here! Right on cue, Quin cracks his opponent with a massive right hand that draws loud cheers!

Quin controlling the position easily from mount.
Rockstar takes a big shot to the head but keeps on trying to improve his position.
Quin lands a heavy elbow.


It looks like Luke Rockstar has been cut.
Quin postures up and cracks his opponent a couple of times before moving back into close ground control. Rockstar looks a forlorn figure.
Quin pausing momentarily but resumes with a couple of decent strikes that do a bit of damage.
Quin has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Quin lands an elbow that was bordering on illegal but the referee lets it go with a warning.
Rockstar working to try and regain half guard.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Quin avoids the attempt from Rockstar to control.
Quin connects with a couple of good shots from mount.
Quin cracks Rockstar with a nasty head shot there - the crowd let out an audible gasp there, as the noise reverberated around the arena.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Rockstar is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.
Quin has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
Quin trying to control but he's not successful this time.
Quin with a couple of short strikes.
Quin pausing momentarily but resumes with a couple of decent strikes that do a bit of damage.
Rockstar tries to hold on but Quin pushes him away.

Quin is looking to secure an arm. He's managed it! He's pivoting for an armbar - that looks tight! But Rockstar has managed to get out of it and now he's in a dominant position. Nice work from Rockstar!

Rockstar working in close now, lands a nice elbow to the side of Quin's head.
Rockstar slips effortlessly into side control - very nice.
Quin is looking for a sweep.
Rockstar lands a knee to the body and a forearm to the face.
Quin tries to buck Rockstar off but Rockstar is having none of it.
Quin sneaks a leg under to get back to half guard.
Quin wants to improve his position but Rockstar is controlling well.
Rockstar is thwarting Quin's attempts to control the position.

Quin moves into full guard.

Quin looking for a guillotine here but Rockstar defends easily.
Quin is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Rockstar preventing the sweep.
Rockstar tries to free his leg and advance position but Quin is retaining full guard.

Quin working for a triangle but Rockstar defends it easily.

And that's the end of the fight!
Matt Quin comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Quin has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
