Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between John Smith (ranked 2647 p4p, 267 weight class) and Jon Toryner (ranked 6978 p4p, 474 weight class). Smith comes into the arena with Panini blaring out of the sound system. Jon Toryner is the more experienced fighter, so let's see if that makes a difference tonight.

3 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Jon Toryner! The judges for this bout are Gwen Towbar, Alan Glass and Tiny Johnson.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Smith fails in his attempt to clinch. Toryner misses with a series of wild punches.
Toryner throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
Smith is looking to counter the offense by Toryner and move into the clinch. Smith showing good head movement there, avoiding the strikes from Toryner.
Smith moves into the clinch. The pace slowing considerably in the clinch, as Smith takes a break from that fighting nonsense to think about the finer things in life. Toryner is trying to push Smith away but Smith has him pressed against the cage, so he's going nowhere. Smith tries to pull guard but Toryner forces him back to his feet, against the cage. Smith is moving his hips around well on the bottom and has managed to get back to half guard. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Toryner tries to stand but his hand is stuck under Smith. Smith is looking to control Toryner's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Smith avoid being mounted? Toryner gets to his feet - back to striking we go! Toryner throws a right hand that Smith ducks under and follows up with a left that Smith also avoids with ease. Smith lands three nice shots there - that looked like it hurt!

Smith goes for a double leg but Toryner avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Toryner continues to drive forward. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for John Smith. That's going to take a lot out of him. Toryner throws a nice looking combination but Smith bobs and weaves to avoid any damage. Smith bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control. Toryner is trying to buck Smith off. Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here. Smith decides to stand up, so the ref orders Toryner to his feet.

Toryner lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Smith circles away quickly and effectively. Toryner throws a series of punches but Smith avoids them all with ease. Smith quickly followed up with a counter body kick but doesn't connect. This has been an exciting period of action! Smith fakes the leg kick and cracks Toryner in the body. Smith tries to clinch there but Toryner circles away.

Toryner really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Smith. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out. Smith wants to lay and pray for a moment but Toryner keeps working. Toryner prevents Smith from improving position. Smith stands up and beckons Toryner to his feet. Toryner misses with a two punch combination.

Smith is really struggling to control Toryner but he's trying to hold on to the position. Smith is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Toryner is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Smith is trying to close the distance and clinch up, after that failed offence from Toryner. Smith moves into the clinch. Toryner has been the more effective fighter overall so far. Toryner tries to break the clinch but Smith is controlling the position. Toryner is fighting off a takedown attempt but Smith is just too persistent for him and manages to trip Toryner to the mat. Toryner regains guard as soon as the fighters hit the mat. The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here. Toryner manages to wriggle out and sneak his way back up to his feet, so the fighters are now clinched up against the cage. Toryner has had enough of the clinch and is looking to separate. Smith content to slow the pace in the clinch.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Smith is trying to maintain a safe position but Toryner gets an underhook and turns Smith into the cage. Toryner breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat. Smith throws a half hearted mid kick. Toryner misses with a few strikes there.
Smith shoots in and drives through. Toryner sprawls well. Smith looking to score a takedown here. Toryner is defending well but Smith drives through and ends up in Toryner's guard. Smith working some strikes from top position. Smith trying to control the position from guard on top but Toryner is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Smith lands a couple of decent looking shots. Smith drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Smith jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Smith trying to control but Toryner is working from the bottom. Toryner is working an open guard so Smith takes the opportunity to get back to his feet. Toryner throws a combination that misses and Smith counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw. Toryner lands a two punch combo.

Smith shoots in and bounces Toryner off the cage to secure the takedown into guard. John Smith has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here! Smith slips effortlessly into side control - very nice.
