The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Jack shoots in for a double leg but Rutledge sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy. Rutledge changes levels looking for a counter takedown but doesn't commit. Jack throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Rutledge. Jack chopping away at his opponent's legs.
Rutledge tries to score a power double leg takedown but Jack sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Rutledge somewhat. Jack looks to throw a body kick and Rutledge counters with a takedown into side control. Jack struggling a bit here. Rutledge tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Rutledge has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought! Rutledge is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Jack has escaped the position, nice work there. Jack parries the strikes from Rutledge easily there. Rutledge is wary of posturing up too much because it might enable Jack to escape.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up. Rutledge looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily. Jack pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Rutledge went nuts there looking for a big combo counter but none of the flurry connected. The crowd thankful this round is nearly over. Rutledge clinches up against the cage. Jack stops a takedown attempt from Rutledge.

A combination from Jack does no damage. Rutledge is trying to close the distance and clinch up, after that failed offence from Jack. Jack tries to work over Rutledge's front leg with a kick but Rutledge checks it. Jack shoots in but Rutledge avoids the takedown attempt easily. Rutledge drops down looking for a counter takedown but Jack sprawls and moves away. Rutledge shoots in for a takedown but Jack shows good takedown defense. Rutledge fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt. Omer Rutledge is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things. Jack lands a jab, followed by a cross and another cross, as Rutledge backs up against the cage.
It looks like Omer Rutledge has been cut. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Jack throws a leg kick and Rutledge decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Jack's guard. Jack is breathing heavily. Rutledge working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage. Rutledge throws a strike but Jack rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top. Jack with a nice head shot there. Rutledge is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive. The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity. Rutledge gets tackled into the cage by Jack. Jack maintains the clinch. Rutledge has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. Jack is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet. Rutledge turns his hips and lands a very nice judo throw into side control! Jack throws Rutledge to one side and escapes! Jack closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Rutledge to the mat! Rutledge manages to get full guard. Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show! Rutledge is looking for a triangle but Jack pushes his legs off easily.

That's four minutes gone in the round. Rutledge bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Jack's guard. Rutledge throws a big right hand that misses. Rutledge postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect. Rutledge preventing the sweep. Rutledge throwing strikes from guard but Jack blocks nicely. Rutledge throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent. Jack working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from Rutledge. Bradey Jack has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here! Rutledge makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard. Omer Rutledge is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach. Jack avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
And that's the end of the fight! That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Omer Rutledge. Well I reckon that's a shut out for Rutledge, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent.
